Donald Trump has told a rally in Michigan that he “took a bullet for democracy” when an attempt was made on his life last week.

Attended by thousands, it was Trump’s first rally with new running mate JD Vance - and first since he survived the assassination attempt.

He told a packed arena in Grand Rapids that Democrats have accused him of being “a threat to democracy” and, to huge applause, said he was ready to “take back the White House”.

Many of those at the event, in the battleground state of Michigan, told the BBC that the assassination attempt - which killed an audience member and wounded two others - would not stop them from showing support for the Republican presidential nominee.

Some said they came precisely because of the shooting.

It’d not “ban crazy” to ban literal calls to violence against a politician, no matter how you may feel about that politician, there’s literally no reason to allow that kind of comment.

The law doesn’t care about the possible “morality” of shooting a presidential candidate.

You must feel all laws are good, reasonable, and just.

Nope, but they do have an effect, no matter how you feel about them.

No point in getting yourself a visit from the secret service because you were fed-posting about Trump, or even worse, that you’re visited by the secret service because you’re a moderator in a forum that regularly fed-posts about Trump without moderation.

So, you feel that all laws should be obeyed, regardless of how you feel?

Lmfao, so if I think weed should be legal, I can’t tell you not to sell weed right in front of a cop?

There’s a massive difference between, “Hey he’s just taking reasonable precautions, you probably should too if fascism is coming” and “I agree with all laws.”

I also feel Thomas Crooks was taking a reasonable precaution against fascism.

Nobody here is saying it’s wrong to combat fascism. We are saying to be careful how you say it, lest you find yourself excluded from conversation to protect the platform.
