In itself, having a grandfather with such a record was no great scandal for Freeland—she could not be held responsible for the sins of her grandfather. But when the story first came out, Freeland would not admit the facts. She had described Mykhailo Chomiak as one of the great inspirations in her life and dismissed the stories about his Nazi collaborating past as Russian disinformation. Like many others, she remains in denial about her grandfather’s role promoting the Nazis’ policies and the Holocaust in Ukraine.
Just say that you weren’t aware that your ancestor was a piece of shit and it becomes a non-story. But by denying it, you’ve found the Streisand-effect.
I mean, regardless, she isn’t proud of him for killing Jews. I feel like a lot of people are realizing their family tree might have some bad apples. Kind of sucks to be so high profile while you are finding it out. It probably feels like (to her) people are attacking her family.
Doesn’t matter. Just accept that through no fault of your own, you share genetics with a shithead and don’t lie about it. It’s that easy.
Funny how we hold non Germans to this standard but their nazi nepotism baby elites never had to face the music for their crimes and they derived great economic beneift to this day from it.
