It’s just that they have the most inefficient possible healthcare system, so providing just medicare, medicaid and VA benefits, which don’t come close to covering everyone, costs more (in %of GDP, not just absolute numbers) than for most countries the cost of subsidizing healthcare for everyone.
Hell, even conservatives might be happier under a socialized healthcare system. There could even be LESS government spending and people would be getting subsidized healthcare.
