I had a conversation with some sys-admins that are trying to limit what their kids can access on the internet. One was worried about how to implement a YouTube channel whitelist on his network.
So, an idea came to my mind. Wouldn’t it be relatively easy to implement this using Piped’s API?
Given that the kids’ devices are using self-signed certificates, allowing full traffic monitoring, it should be possible to filter YouTube videos using the data provided by Piped API.
Do you guys think it’s a good idea? I could start this project, if people think that it’s useful.
From what I am hearing is the youtube ads are getting bad to. I currently use Unwatched on my iPhone or iPad so i do not know but I am thinking of getting into hosting piped and using it in place of my AppleTV and screen casting from my phone.
I also use pihole to block out the adult content I do not know about, I just hate going somewhere I think is safe and boobs pop out at me because I misspelled a domain or something.
Do not know but maybe pihole or Adgard could be setup some way to block the child unfriendly youtube channels.
You can’t block YouTube content on a DNS level. You need to implement HTTPS inspection of some kind, and then you need to find a way to grab information about the channel that is being streamed.
I am well aware that pihole does not block youtube ads. I liked giving money to youtube creators so I paid for youtube premium, come 2025 I decided that I still wanted to use youtube but I was not going to be paying google anymore. I realized google was probably making more money from ads that where not targeted to me I had degoogled (minus youtube) and had been using pihole for a few years before opening a new account so the google knew very little about me so I would get weird ad combinations. I use Unwatched on my iPhone to block ads, I am considering using piped in the near future ro block youtube apps and finally degoogle completely.
