The new iOS/iPadOS 17, WatchOS 10 and MacOS Sonoma public betas are out.
Are you going to try them? This is the first time i’m eager to try the beta, as there are so many nice small things I would like to try, but I’m not sure if this is stable enough to try it?
I just can’t deal with betas anymore. I’m glad others take the plunge and report issues though.
Exactly! I’m at a stage in my life where I just want my stuff to work. A decade ago, I would be installing betas the moment they were available . But that version of me is gone.
Also there has been nothing particularly blood pumping about OS update for good few years now.
I jumped on the iPadOS one because of Stage Manager. I use SM all the time during the day with an external KB and trackpad, so I really wanted to see those updates.
So far (and I’m sure there will be some bugs), I’m pretty happy with it. You can move the app windows where you want now! What a concept! The only time the OS moves them is if you place two of them of the same size right on top of each other. This is just to make sure you always have a way to tap on the window. But most of the time it just lets you do what you want.
And beyond that first “gotcha,” you can layer windows on top of each other without the OS aggressively moving everything around. What a concept!
I haven’t tried any of the other new features yet, but I’m pretty happy with SM so far.
For moving the app windows anywhere you want… is that available on the iPhone too?
That is what has prevented me from purchasing a larger iPhone, because I can’t physically reach the apps on the upper parts of the screen. If I can place the apps on the bottom part of the screen, then I’ll get a larger phone for sure.
I’ve been wanting a pro for the new camera for a while, but have been holding onto my iPhone 7. If they turn this into a real thing (and not just beta), I’ll switch.
No. I’m afraid Stage Manager is not available for iOS
Darn, thank you
I am using an external monitor connected to my m1 iPad Pro but i ran in to following issues which might be resolved with the new update.
Maybe you could tell me:
- is it possible to share a connected external screen e.g. in MS Teams or is it still limited to the iPad screen only?
- is it possible to play audio on the iPad and not via the external monitor?
Many thanks in advance!
- I don’t use Teams, so I’m not sure about this one. My guess would be no.
- And currently, you cannot target the audio output in that way, no. At least not that I’ve found. This is something I’d like to see, too. I also have a M1 ipad and use it on an external monitor during the day a lot. My dock has a headphone jack (courage!) I use with my PC speakers, and I have to unplug and re-plug them in every time because the dock thinks I want to use the monitor speakers via HDMI.
Ugh, ok but thanks for your insights.
Not this time. Before going abroad, it’s too dangerous, I need to rely on a good mobile system.
I got an iPhone 14 pro today, haven’t been on iOS since I had an iPhone X. Feels amazing compared to Calyx on my Pixel but I’d rather not use a beta and make the experience even harder to get used to. Might put my iPad on 17 though.
For those on the fence, it’s quite stable. Miles better than iOS 16 around this time.
I would say the opposite. Messages has a keyboard bug and the search features top hits doesn’t pull up the app you want unless you type and retype the name at least twice. That’s going to be a daily annoyance until those are fixed at least.
But, there is also a lot less new stuff this time around. Less stuff to break.
Nah I’ll wait
I can speak for the beta for iOS. I’m currently using it for my daily driver and I must say that it’s stable enough. There are a few hiccups on keyboard, and the battery life is subpar as of the moment as I just installed the public beta.
But all in all, one of the most stable iOS beta release ever.
Been waiting for the iOS and watchOS PBs. I’m updating both now.
let me know how the watch one is. maybe I will give it a try too
So far, so good. The UI changes will take a bit of getting used to. I haven’t learned a quick way to change faces, assuming there is one.
The new Snoopy face is outstanding.
Love the Standby mode in iOS.
I’ve been using the developer beta of WatchOS 10 and it’s been fine.
The watch one is the only one I’m iffy on and will probably wait for beta 2. If they let you downgrade without sending it in I would be all over it.
I have updated ipad OS which hasn’t had any issues so far, watch OS and IOS I am undecided on currently
I am mostly looking forward to the watch changes. but with beta on the watch there is no going back. So I will most likely pass on that one till the very end.
Last time I downloaded the beta it broke my transit card app which made commuting a PITA. As much as I want FaceTime on the TV, I’ll just have to wait.
iOS 17 seems great for me so far. Haven’t tried iPadOS yet, but I will soon. Sonoma is good so far as well, aside from a couple small issues that are essentially just nitpicks.
Been running developer beta with almost no issues. Sometimes StandBy behaves weird and I have to toggle it on and off that’s pretty much it.
I’m on the same boat, not sure if stable enough for day to day use.
I use iOS 17DB3 as a daily driver. I don’t know how different the public beta build is to the developer build but I can report, apart from some widgets not displaying data, it has been very reliable so far.
Public Beta that came out today is the same build as Dev Beta 3.
Then there is nothing to fear.
Some folks (me included) are having an intermittent keyboard glitch where it disappears in apps. iMessage for me. Hoping the next build fixed it.
It’s got several severe usability bugs like the keyboard not popping up correctly and the search too hits not putting up apps your type the name of. It’s certainly usable but those will get old quick.
Guided access is broken for me as well. I have to hard reset the phone to exit lol.
It’s not enough of an annoyance to downgrade or not use it though.
Thanks, that’s good to hear!
yeah, all my devices are my primary ones, so hesitating a bit. but Im going for the iPadOS public beta, as I use iPad the least. So, fingers crossed its stable enough for reading :D
Good luck mate!
it’s got a bunch of new improvements overall - i’m enjoying
@desmosthenes @prwnr these betas have been pretty solid for me.
Been running it on my iPad since dev beta 1. No problems. Not putting it on my only iPhone or my watch though.
