I know that Chris Hansen can come off, to some, as a bit of a skeevy opportunist, but I really don’t care how these monsters get exposed. I wish him the best luck in the world.

Chris Hansen has reached out to @RealSchlep, planning an upcoming documentary investigating Roblox’s handling of child safety issues.

The rest of the article is about Roblox’s history of not doing enough, and CEO’s David Baszucki weird plans to add dating to it instead of improving moderation.

Roblox is a game I would never let my kids play. My ex’s kid met predators on it when he was 9 or 10. During his middle school and early high school years, he chatted with predators on Discord.

When I reported it to Discord, they made me go through and flag all of the specific explicit images and messages that were sent before they would take action.

I heard people on podcasts often say yhe same thing: “i would never let my kid play roblox” and i know it’s kinda sketchy, but how sketchy for the average user?

Because i also often hear parents who tell me their kids only really care about roblox and they only know that they think it’s dumb. So would you tell them to not let their kids play roblox, but would that be an overreaction?

Roblox is basically a glorified chat room app with micro transactions that is advertised as a game. Over half the user base is under the age of 16, so it’s a prime target for predators. Parents don’t understand it. Either they think it’s like Minecraft or they find it annoying so they ignore what kids are actually doing there.

I personally discourage parents around me when it comes to Roblox because after talking to the kid in our situation, I felt like Roblox had a severe problem.

That said every situation is different. Responsible parents who actively monitor that stuff or kids that are more mature might be okay. And, that was almost ten years ago (2016/2017). It’s possible Roblox is trying harder. I don’t know.

I was a kid in AOL and Yahoo chatrooms in the late 90s/early 00s. The internet was new and my parents didn’t understand it then either. I remember predators frequently messaging me then and this feels like exactly the same thing.

I know it’s tough. You don’t want to deprive your kid of socializing with their peers, but you want to protect them and I don’t think there is single right answer to Roblox.

I play sometimes with my you ger brother and as long as you aren’t a negligent parent your kid will be fine.

A lot of parents now want everyone else to parent their kid for them
