    In so far as internet points are concerned, sure. As a vote against allowing big tech censorship here? Absolutely counts.

        Lemmy is open sourced so the sorting algorithms are also open sourced. Downvotes on posts are part of the sorting, as one would expect.

          It’s amazing how much people don’t understand how voting works or what it is for.

          Downvoting posts push them below better posts. If someone thinks they don’t do anything: change your default post sorting to controversial for a few days and see if you notice a difference.

        In case your question is genuine, yes it matters that we don’t allow this place to be governed by the same arbitrary rules that walled gardens enforce. If you can’t see why, it is not my responsibility to explain it to you.
