Huge numbers of Hexbears pretending they’re not reddit-logo while simultaneously doing the exact same “Oh you’re vegan? I’m going to eat extra meat because of you” shit

My main issue with vegan struggle sessions is that it affirms my hesitance to associate with other vegans because they come in incredible hostile and aggressive to literally any space upending anything to make a point in such a way that makes everyone roll their eyes at them. Not because veganism isn’t the morally correct position to take (it is) but because online vegans haven’t found a way to overcome their inability to speak to others like they’re on the comment section of a Youtube video and end up invalidating any point they could’ve made by acting like a fool.

Like I’m not going to defend someone who equates animal liberation on the same level with black civil rights or palestinian liberation at a meeting that is comprised almost entirely of black/hispanic/palestinian people talking about the links between palestinian and black liberation like someone I know IRL tried to do and go shouted down (rightfully I might add) when the PoC in the meeting either looked uncomfortable or offended since what it sounded like they were being equated to animals with all the racial baggage that it carries.

Learn to talk to other people and maybe people may be more amendable. Bullying only works on people just as online as you are, and that doesn’t encompass as many people as you think, that’s why people tend to reject you and your messaging based not on its content but on its delivery.

We all know better than this on every other topic.

Not if you’re telling black and brown people that saving chickens from the slaughterhouse is on the same level as their fear of being shot on the street, as in the example I used.

maybe i dont know how ‘convincing people’ works but my gut reaction to ‘should we let civility get in the way of actually doing something’ was not becoming as unapproachable, unattractive and generally repugnant as possible

            your last few comments:

smuglord im just going to spam this emote and create a silly strawman of their argument which totally makes me right, which ironically makes me the exact person the emoji was made to critique but im not going to think about that. That’ll show 'em

While veganism is good and superior to eating meat, I agree, like, this is not a great way to spread the practice and convince others of that. Like, even among vegans it’s not a consensus that animal lives and human lives are 1:1, in all contexts. So going off that logical assumption and then straight to declaring animal processing the worst genocide of all time, worse than the Holocaust, is going to throw people off lol.

The struggle sessions will keep going until the reactionaries get banned. Imagine how shitty this site would be if racists or transphobes just got their comments removed and were allowed to keep on posting the same shit for days and weeks and months on end.

Unless you wanna go full “no life should ever exist because all life is suffering”, no. We vegans care about the suffering humans cause, because that suffering is entirely unnecessary. And so, so destructive to the planet and to the people who work in animal ag.

Oh, by the way, I never did reply to you about plant milks, because the thread got locked. Plant milks are basically perfect replacements for cow milk. You can bake with them exactly as you would with cow milk and they work precisely as you’d expect. Eggs are the one that’s harder to replace in baking, although even there you can find replacements, it’s just that you need different replacements for different contexts and functions.

              • I assume this was about my brownie thread, I forgot the black bean brownie recipe location but if ya want I can look.

I do actually love that, although plant milks can be a hit an miss I’ve not heard of anyone with a soy allergy (although im a bit allergic to almonds, nothing serious but its annoying) so I think going in a plant milk direction is just better for everyone involved. Although im not going to harp on individuals that don’t.

Eggs seem about right, although are there ethical ways to keep egg production? Asking since its such a hassle to replace them. Although I would like to eat my cookie batter without chance of salmonella.

Its going to be a weird and wonderful world of discovery and change, if we ever get there.

                • Eggs seem about right, although are there ethical ways to keep egg production? Asking since its such a hassle to replace them.

not at industrial scale, part of the problem with chicken farming is the selective breeding has created birds that have too many eggs to stay healthy which can’t be solved by any amount of free-range.

Maybe we can do some wacko scifi shit like deliberately encepha- i don’t remember the term- where the animal only has autonomic systems and never grew enough brain to suffer. Those actually would be Descartes’s meat robots but I’m sure people would find that sort of genetic engineering distasteful even if the assumptions baked into the idea pan out. Maybe i’m overcomplicating it and you could just 3D-print genes into gametes and form the eggs in an artificial whatever macro eggs form in, i’m not a chicken doctor.

Ok, that’s fine. We can’t go back to that now, the earth is too fucked and there are too many people eating too much meat to produce all we need without industrial animal ag. So I fail to see why it matters that (most) animal husbandry wasn’t environmentally destructive.

Did anyone prominent get banned this time or is it just one of those rehashed struggle sessions where nothing substantial happens? So far, I’ve seen this person get banned, but they got banned for being some antinatalist freak in the middle of some vegan struggle session, so they don’t count.
