Doesn’t matter, it drives user engagement and website traffic. Easy way to show to advertisers that Reddit is very much alive. They don’t care what is drawn, as long as it’s nothing illegal or bad for advertisers. People want to spend 24h to write “fuck u/spez”? Sure, whatever.

Yeah, this was well played from reddit, they knew that r/place was one of the most popular things reddit ever did, so luring people back with it is excellent plan. They don’t care shit about the fuck spez texts, they can now say that they broke engagement records, even without third party api’s.

Sure, American advertisers don’t like that, but foul language is all over Reddit, so that’s not something that will drive advertisers away that would otherwise consider advertising on Reddit.

Right? It reminds me of those popular twitter right wingers that get exposure from negative publicity. People feel so smug and proud that they “dunked” on this loser who would otherwise be ignored and forgotten and instead they amplify and magnify the message.

They’ve already used one CEO as a fall guy (er… fall gal). Not that I’m a fan, but do we really think spez is the one person in charge of all the stuff going down?

Yes and no. CEOs do have autonomy but in a case like Reddit they are also beholden to the Board of Directors. They make commitments/predictions/projections for the board all toward the ultimate end of working toward a high return on investment for the members of the board and other shareholders. The CEO is then responsible to make these things come true and has autonomy to do things as he sees fit. But if the board has enough power, in any case where they don’t like how the CEO is performing, they will eventually vote to remove him.

What pearl clutching son of a bitch at lemmy.ml decided its users were too fragile to hear the word “bitch”? And here’s the real question, can you read ot or does it censor mine? Because if you can read it then what’s the point of censoring your own users?

Edit: yeah Kbin lets you say it.

Nobody can read it, check the source of your comment. The word gets immediately replaced when you post. I’d like to know what words are forbidden, is there a list somewhere?

Nobody can read it, check the source of your comment.

Correction: No one browsing through your specific server can read it. The rest of us see it just fine.

From where I’m sitting, it seems like the filter is applied (a) when a lemmy.ml user makes a post (it strips it from the source and says removed for everyone) and (b) when lemmy.ml federates another instance’s comment over (source instance and any other non-censored federated instance has the word intact, ONLY you guys don’t see it).

            Come see!

That’s how the Fediverse works. That word is constantly used in inflammatory comments. Don’t like the rules, then leave.

Or stay and rightfully criticize the instances that use words filters.

Here’s a wild idea: word filters are the most brain-dead way to deal with a problem. They don’t understand context – you can’t even use a “bad word” so people understand what you’re denouncing. You can’t share your experience with being called a removed.

They’re also easily bypassed with odd spellings by people that are going to use a “no no word” to be assholes.

Normally, I would agree with you. But, I would like to offer a different point of view simply because this is a platform on the internet where the vast majority of the users seem to be from the US.

On a project like r/place, I kind of see that as a showing of people saying hey, we use this site, we are here everyday, there’s lots of us, and we’re from this country!

Blind nationalism is certainly bad, but I don’t really think that’s the reason all the flags are so numerous and big:

        • Your average redditor is on r/place and wants to place a dot on something. However, you can imagine they participate casually and aren’t joining any of the designated subreddits or whatever to coordinate their effort. So what is the lowest hanging fruit they can do to place a dot?
        • They can fix or contribute to an already existing artwork. However, to do that they already need to know what the artwork is supposed to look like. Well, flags are well known and generally easy to reproduce
        • In fact, some flags, such as Germany or France, are endlessly reproducable, and you can just keep infinitely expanding horizontally or vertically, contributing to the size of these monstrosities
        • But maybe you still want to contribute to something that resonates with you, instead of just a blue corner or a black void. Maybe lots of communities want to put artwork on place, but your average user will still probably resonate more with their identity as a German or American more than their identity as a subscriber of r/aww
        • Finally, all of these factors spiral. Maybe a reddit user is a fan of r/HydroHomies, and it just so happens they’re making an icon. But the user doesn’t know about this because it’s too small to pick out, and if they did they’re afraid they’d just mess up the design, but the flag of Germany is right there, so might as fill in the bits on the end of the rectangle that aren’t straight yet.

TL;DR: r/place is just conducive to flags. also i had 10 mins to burn so i wrote all this for some reason idk

Higher traffic stats means higher user engagement. It helps with higher valuation for the IPO.

If you want to hurt them, remove your content, do a GDPR request, and disengage. Focus on the Fediverse instead.

Only reason to bring r/pics now instead of April 1st was to drive the engagement, and by looks of it Reddit succeeded immensely in that.

They baited people and everyone bit it.

I don’t think anyone at Reddit cares what message is passed through this as long as they get traffic.

They are like Velma of social media

I mean employees aren’t dumb and any opportunity to make management look stupid for stupid decisions that likely cost themselves (remember they get stock) money they will 100% take.
