I was going to say these are definitely the backup singers to a Muppets musical number that the villain performs. Halfway thru the song one of them comically yet horrifically dies and the rest laugh about it

That’s what I got. They riddle you and also cackle when you get it wrong.
They’re just there making sure you can’t get to the Goblin King before time runs out.
I was just trying to track a raven and found them instead. Their calls are really good.

A local artist near me carves and polishes these into mushrooms and they’re absolutely beautiful. I have several different ones. They look sorta like this:
