Speaking of defederations, I still think my “business in the front, party in the back” idea has some merit. I’d originally suggested it as a SFW version of burggit that’s federated with the original.

After thinking about it some more, I think it’d be better if someone were to spin up a new, otherwise unaffiliated generalist instance. It’d have a mainstream content policy in order to appeal to fleeing redditors, but a liberal federation policy. Basically just “make sure your users obey our rules when on our communities, and we’ll remain federated with you”. It’d probably still have to defederate exploding-heads, since they’re unlikely to actually behave, but no big loss there. We just need something to buck the trend of arbitrary defederations, and lay out explicit, reasonable, objective criteria for federation.

Does anyone here have the expertise to take on such a project, and potentially scale it up? I’m not in a position to do so, but I’d love to help out.

Oh. There’s no need to make a new one, there’s plenty of those. Just make an account with any of the instances we are still federated with. If you are lucky, you’ll find one where the admin is just - absent.

I’m suggesting it more for the general health of the threadiverse and as a way to keep burggit from being isolated, rather than for my own personal convenience. Something to counter the current puritan populist trend.

Of the top 10, the only instances that haven’t defederated us are lemmy.fmhy.ml, vlemmy.net, and programming.dev. I’m assuming that programming.dev is a fluke, and will defederate us as soon as they notice us. How do we know that fmhy and vlemmy won’t also defederate? They don’t have any specific federation policy posted. And if they won’t, are they capable of scaling up?

So basically a middleman instance with access to both? I like that idea a bit.

I just don’t know how feasible it would be.

I can already see the posts "X is federated with Y! Defederate against them too or you we’ll say you support child rape!’

Or even “X is a front instance for pedophiles!”

      What’s the defence against that?

It might just be better to have alts IMO.

That was the original idea, a SFW burggit.social that federates with burggit.moe. Now I’m more thinking that the threadiverse in general will have its growth stunted if puritans remain in control. The internet is for porn, after all. Eventually most instances should be ones with well-defined, liberal federation policies, while those with more restrictive or arbitrary federation will be relegated to the sidelines. One such instance is needed to get this process started though, and the sooner the better.

I can already see the posts "X is federated with Y! Defederate against them too or you we’ll say you support child rape!’

Eh, they can try, but I don’t think they’ll get much traction. There haven’t been any calls to defederate fmhy or vlemmy AFAIK. Users on the other current big instances aren’t going to see any burggit content anyway, so they don’t need to care. Admins of those instances likewise don’t need to care, as the content isn’t touching their servers and causing possible jurisdictional legal issues for them. If you take those two cards away from the puritans, they lose a lot of power.
