The Chernobyl accident fascinates me, so I’m reading Midnight in Chernobyl by Adam Higginbotham. I have read INSAG-7 (a couple of times), so I think I have a decent layperson understanding of the accident. INSAG-7, however, is primarily a mechanical document, and I wanted to learn more about the human aspect of the operators. I have to admit, I’m disappointed, but it’s not the fault of the book, since I set my expectations incorrectly. Apparently, Higginbotham interviewed many people involved in the accident over a decade, and I was hoping this was a more journalistic book with quotes and facts and figures. Instead, Higginbotham set out to tell the story of the accident, and that’s how the book reads. This is a fine approach, just not quite the one I wanted to read. While I’ve caught a few errors, the book is well researched. It does irk me that he cites Grigori Medvedev in his work, since Medvedev’s book is known to have inaccuracies. At the very least, Midnight in Chernobyl is far more accurate than the HBO miniseries.

And then you can remove KDE Plasma by running dnf remove @kde-desktop but I’d advice you to take a good look at the packages being removed and evaluate whether it’ll remove anything critical. I’m not going to say this won’t cause any issues, but you can always try it - just make backups beforehand.

EDIT: And just to be sure, look in to changing the display manager before removing the old one. It shouldn’t be too difficult.

I have a one book edition of The Lord of the Rings I bought over 20 years ago. Reading it can be uncomfortable for my hands, being a fairly hefty book and not the easiest to hold. To remedy this, I bought another edition that’s divided into three books and also includes The Hobbit, just so it’d be easier for me to read. But because I’m a sentimental dumbass, I still occasionally pick up the older edition I’ve read many times, because I have affection for it. I love the green cover with a nice painting of Gandalf. Other than that, I don’t think I have any book with multiple copies.

People really fail to understand what a truly colossal undertaking a site like YouTube is. It’s a technological wonder that they are able to process that much data and serve it so efficiently. Hate YouTube all you want, I do, but the engineers at Google are fucking magicians.

Perfectly true. It would’ve been nice, if it wasn’t so inherently abusable. We can’t have nice things.

Oh, that’s a great book! A heavy read for sure. A friend aptly called it ‘nourishing’, which is true of most Steinbeck. Just one of his books sates you for quite a while. I’m glad to hear you like it!

I’m close to finishing The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. This month has been a bit rough in my personal life and I haven’t, perhaps, been quite feeling it. Luckily, there’s always next year.

I don’t know what I’ll read next.
