As a mother of an actual human I gotta say $1,500 for a lifetime is a ridiculous figure that wouldn’t even last a week when covering basic necessities (stroller, bedding, diapers, lotion, etc.)
Thanks! I personally use a VPS because I don’t have a stable connection at home. If you could spare 4 or 5 Euros a month, I would definitely recommend self-hosting
I think the safest thing would be self-hosting your own solo GoToSocial instance. With SLURP you could import your entire Mastodon archive… and if you’re not proficient, coding-wise, you could install GoToSocial via YunoHost.org, which is so easy to follow, a total newbie could do it (speaking from experience). The only requirement would be a basic VPS (say, about 5 Euros a month). If you could give up 1-2 coffees a month, it’s not that big of an expense. I personally love my GtS account, as I get to personalize it, setting character limits, uploading my own custom emojis, etc.

Have you tried using elk.zone? It mimics Twitter’s interface and has some great additional features (like zen mode)

thank you! I’m so pleased to hear that ☺️

FYI I wrote a blog post doing a show and tell of Sharkey (a fork of Misskey) in December: https://news.elenarossini.com/sharkey-a-fediverse-project-that-is-beautiful-inside-out/ 🤗

For people interested in seeing a *key software in action, I’ve written a blog post about Sharkey in December: https://news.elenarossini.com/sharkey-a-fediverse-project-that-is-beautiful-inside-out/

Aw thank you for the kind words - it’s super encouraging to hear you’ve been enjoying my articles ☺️
I was doing research for my part 2 on Voyager (my Lemmy app) and that’s how I stumbled upon these comments. Thanks again ❤️

This is wonderful, thank you so much!
I’ve been holding off from switching to Android (and getting a GrapheneOS x Pixel phone) because I have 5 years’ worth of messages on Signal on my iPhone… I’ll look into this method for sure
Oooh interesting! Could you please elaborate / share any resources about this?

I’m now hosting my own Pixelfed instance (as of Tuesday). I really like being in charge of my own server…
The drawback I’m seeing is that Explore and search sometimes yield no results.
Like searching for “Nikon” just now results in “no content found” 🤷🏻♀️

Even if your Mastodon instance is federated with Threads, you can still block the whole domain from your account. Explanation / walkthrough here: https://mastodon.social/@_elena/113797840274825233

Thank you for your comment – OP here (of the blog post).
**Calckey.world **is a Sharkey instance (a fork of MissKey). I LOVE IT SO MUCH, it’s my favorite Fediverse software so far… I’m planning to write about it soon for my blog.
Yeah DeepL is NOT part of the Fediverse - I used it to translate a comment from Portuguese to English. Still my favorite online translator but my husband also uses ChatGPT for those purposes and I’ve been really impressed by its quality, too.
Loops.video just launched - it’s the Fediverse’s answer to TikTok by the creator of Pixelfed, FediDB, etc. It’s not active yet, for now you can register your username, but Dan has yet to onboard users. I believe he said he needs to upgrade to a new server because of all the sign-ups.
Linux phone: yeah, I cannot wait to build one. Definitely my goal for next year - as well as a Linux computer :)
Hello! Apologies for the belated reply but I was out of town and offline most of the weekend. Yes I’m seeing this in Lemmy too (and Mastodon). Gotta check PieFed now :)

Thank you for another great recommendation 🙏

Thank you for the feedback and the testimony – original blog post author right here 👋 I’m glad to hear you were pleasantly surprised and I appreciate the tips about opensource.com and The Cathedral and the Bazaar - made a note to look it up and read it.
