Lots of fond memories watching Planet Earth in the evenings with a cup of herbal tea.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Starbucks CEO defends a cup of coffee costing $9English
9·2 days agoI got an espresso machine a few years ago and learned to make a proper latte with it. At this point, a $9 cup of charry sugar water made by a teenager in a fast food restaurant doesn’t really appeal to me.
Listening to a group just jamming in any genre is boring. Selecting the best parts and composing them into to a refined piece of music with a lot of deliberate thought behind it goes a long way towards creating something worthy of a listener’s time.

3·3 days agoI’d be curious about stats on downvoting as well. Anecdotally, downvote frequency seems to vary by community. Personally, I don’t downvote for differences of opinion, and instead withhold upvotes, with downvotes reserved for blatantly toxic behavior. The etiquette across Lemmy seems varied, though.

This is the bee’s knees.
Supposedly in 250 million years, there will be another supercontinent dubbed Pangea Ultima. It’s expected to be inhospitable and wipe out all mammals, so not sure who would be around to build or ride such a future train. Supercontinents suck, as interesting as they may sound.

291·8 days agoJust as open weight models are getting good. Qwen 3.6 27B just dropped with claimed performance approaching Opus 4.6, but it can run on a Mac with a M-series SoC. I tested it out today on a M4 Pro with Ollama and Cline and was impressed with its reasoning, but it was slow. Going to try with llama.cpp tomorrow and mess around tweaking it for speed.

AI coding agents are useful, but it’s time for the cloud-based models to chill out so we can get cheap RAM again to run our shit locally.

Linux@lemmy.world•Waveform FREE - A Good Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) on Linux (beside Audacity)English
2·10 days agoSounds like the core engine is FOSS at least: https://github.com/Tracktion/tracktion_engine?tab=License-1-ov-file. Unless it’s all 100% FOSS, might as well go with Reaper or another paid DAW, though.

2·10 days agoI suppose if the extensions are also FOSS, paying for them is fair enough. I use Blender and buy paid extensions that are GPL licensed, which is way better than subscription-only software. Free as in freedom, not beer, and freedom is worth paying for, IMO.

18·15 days agoI know people who lied about having a degree, could do the job, and never got caught. I suppose speed running a degree from a degree mill yields a similar level of education, except with a piece of paper.
