Lemmy.ml, like lemmygrad.ml and hexbear.net, has consistently been accused of improper Federation practices and many instances have decided to ban one or both of the latter by default, with many individual users having already gone further to block the former as well. However, many individual users on lemmy.ml seem unaware of the accusations of the practices of their admins, and some people go so far as to see lemmy.ml as a sort of default instance on the Fediverse.

This discussion promotes wider knowledge of the situation and what might be done about it in the future, in order to e.g. not turn away new potential Federation members (Fedizens?:-) that could otherwise associate what happens on that instance as something relating to the Fediverse as a whole.

I personally have previously defended the makers of Lemmy software - e.g. all those others like squabbles.io failed b/c the makers tried to make a profit and hoarded everything to themselves, whereas the beauty of FOSS shines around the world.

That said, it seems like a good discussion to have either way: are the principles of authoritarianism too divergent from that of the more… - what is the opposite term, “freedom-loving” - world?

And now it is starting to bother me: is “tankie” truly a pejorative word? Like if I were to substitute the f*# word or the N-word, it would be horrible. Whereas if I call someone trans or cis or gay or straight or something, that’s totally fine b/c that’s what they are. I literally do not know the answer to that. I suppose in https://lemmy.ml/post/16523224 we will find out!? :-P
