Castro didn’t reveal himself to be communist until late into the revolution. There was a US citizen who defected to Cuba to fight for liberation thinking Castro was just some vague progressive. After he came out as ML, the American defected back to the US and joined the CIA to sabotage the revolution lol
If I remember correctly, Fidel wasn’t actually a communist at the start of the revolution but eventually become one at a later point influenced in part by his brother and Che. So he wasn’t really hiding anything, he just evolved.
