Musician who knows nothing about politics, talks about politics, more at 11
“I mean, it’s clearly not working in Israel at the moment,” he said. “In my view, it sort of emboldens the worst aspects of the current government. They exploit this isolationist thing, like ‘The whole world is against us. No one will come and play.’ It’s used to further their nefarious agendas, while, at the same time, punishes ordinary fans.”
That’s a good point, we wouldn’t want to punish the poor ordinary fans. Who live in Israel. In illegal settlements.
At least its not hard to boycott Nick Cave. Been doing that forever
Genuinely have no clue who this guy is lol anyway back to boycotting him lol
Imagine if the singer from Type O Negative did indie hipster flannelcore shit
Is he as outwardly as fash as Petet Steele was?
I’d describe his politics as “pessimist hippie”
it’s not a cultural boycott and that’s the fucking point. it’s a targeted deprivation of profits from capitalists to extract concessions, and it is provably effective. “cultural boycott” is just nonsense anyway, what does it mean to boycott a culture, especially a nonexistant isntraeli one
The fact that governments everywhere are banning BDS tells me that it’s extremely effective. If it didn’t work they wouldn’t care.
Guarantee “cultural” was just the modifier he tacked on to preempt the very obvious facts that boycotts do work
Just like China Hawks started calling it “cultural genocide” when it got too transparently ridiculous to call vocational schools genocide.
Genocide is a key component of Israeli culture, as pointed out by US lawmakers. To oppose genocide is a cultural boycott of Israel, and it harms Israelis by making them feel like targets.
Look, trying to punish ethnic cleansing, genocide, and aparthied sounds good and all, but have you considered that it’s actually quite inconvenient to me?
Settlers in the genocidal entity of Israel are missing out on their favorite artists? Boohoo
This is a real person? I thought he was just a character in Portal.
Gee guess I’ll continue to not give a shit about this wanker
rich poser shithead loves genocide, too much of a coward to admit it
I cannot fucking wait for Nick Cave to die

But I also do not support the Boycott, Divestments and Sanctions movement, as you know. I think the cultural boycott of Israel is cowardly and shameful. In fact, this is partly the reason I am playing Israel – not as support for any particular political entity but as a principled stand against those who wish to bully, shame and silence musicians. I don’t intend to engage in a detailed discussion as to how the boycott of Israel can be seen to be anti-Semitic at heart and, furthermore, does not work (rather, it risks further entrenching positions in Israel in opposition to those you support), but even the estimable Noam Chomsky considers the BDS as lacking legitimacy and inherently hypocritical. What we actually have here is a fundamental difference of opinion as to what the purpose of music is.

No, what we have here are people engaging with the material reality of music being sold as a commodity and functioning as a cultural product that legitimizes a genocidal state with the veneer of international cultural convergence in the Middle East’s Only Democracy™, and a man making a fool of himself by failing to consider how he’s a part of a system that’s larger than himself.
even the estimable Noam Chomsky
is a fucking clown example #77,148

completely anti-materialist politics. reminds me of that cartoon where the guy is loudly complaining about how he was pushed into being a nazi as he has his head shaved

His music is good which is why this sucks, if his music was bad there’d be no reason to care

Yeah, I feel the same way. I’ll still keep listening to it because unlike Kanye he didn’t say something stunningly bad, basically just the kind of ignorant stuff I’d expect from an out of touch boomer.
Is this the guy who make combustible lemons to burn your house down?
