For someone who has never travelled outside of Canada and the US (besides Iceland) this was not a good choice for her. Even very experienced travellers avoid and/or take extra precautions when it comes to countries under travel warnings. I feel like this experience is just going to make her not want to travel outside her comfort zone even more which is too bad because she has the money to do some incredible travelling if she wants. This whole situation just highlights her ignorance, entitledness and sense of being untouchable.

Even when I visit family in my hometown in Mexico (pop 5.5 mill for the metro area), I am SUPER careful. There is a travel warning to the city, as it’s not a resort town or one filled with many tourists. I am able to speak the language, so I avoid speaking English in most places. I’m pretty street smart and know the city well but still avoid taking ubers or flashing anything expensive. My phone stays in my forward facing anti theft bag. I walk with purpose and make no eye contact. I take all these precautions as someone who BLENDS into the local population. I can’t even imagine how she is going to be out there.
