Are there any rules on Lemmy.World about communities where the only poster is someone spam posting inflammatory links? It’s easy enough to block those communities, but I imagine this is going to be off-putting for some new users not acclimated to the federated style of Lemmy.

Also if rules are being broken by community moderators then the only people that can moderate a moderator is an admin and I’m not sure there are enough to find all of this.

I feel like it’s just coming down to a lack of actual moderators.

Lemmy has been thrown into the spotlight overnight, droves are coming here, and they place wasn’t ready for it.

This is going to be an absolute mess for a while. It will calm down eventually but for right now, everything is kind of chaotic.

Can communities themselves be banned by admins similar to how reddit admins will ban one if it’s not properly moderated?

The same can happen with reddit it’s just that because the subreddits are now so large, most people don’t see it anymore. On the smaller subs you still do

The admin of the instance running the community could close it but if it is on another instance, the best they can do is de-federate the whole other instance completely.

Check the community and what is being spammed by whom, and block accordingly.

I suspect that people in that community have an intention of discussing such things rather than just posting to cause arguments. I don’t think anyone would believe veganism is intentionally inflammatory.

Define “intentionally inflammatory.” Reddit was always very left-leaning politically, so I assume the userbase here is similar. I suspect conservative memes/links/etc. would be considered intentionally inflammatory here in a way that leftist memes/links/etc. would not. It’s not really possible to define a one-size-fits-all definition: One person’s inflammatory is another person’s ideal content.

Additionally, define “spamming links.” The biggest problem with Lemmy so far is lack of content. If I go to the baseball subreddit, for instance, I see a bunch of highlights from the games that took place last night, a bunch of discussions on World Series odds, a bunch of questions about stats, etc. Over here, none of that exists yet. A few people have tried to build individual communities by posting similar content over here. It probably looks like spamming a bunch of links to MLB’s website for highlight videos. However, without someone spamming those links, the community is basically dead with nothing to comment on. We probably need a little spamming at the outset to grow the community to be large enough to sustain itself organically.

I’ve seen some really nasty bigoted anti-jewish, anti-trans and anti-LGBT shit on exploding-heads which makes me question why we federate with them.

I think the main problem is how do you report communities or posts to admins rather than community moderators whom may be the ones breaking rules? You can freely make infinite communities so they become unmoderateable just by doing so.

Reports get sent to both the community mods, and your local admins. If that’s not effective, then you could always just send a private message to the admins of the instance hosting the community.
