I’ve definitely turned into the paranoid nutcase within my friend group in recent years, I hate that everything is “smart” nowadays requiring an app/internet connection & account, just to do basic things that didn’t require any of that before.

What’s some things currently making you ramble like an old man?

Cars. Not only are they getting bigger, with both higher weight and worse blind spots making them more dangerous, but the new technologies they are coming with make me uneasy. The touch screens to control everything from climate control to radio are bad enough, but now they even have social media apps installed! Plus all of the driving aids like lane departure assist up to “autonomous” driving means drivers are paying less and less attention to the road.

Whoever thought it was remotely okay to install interior cameras in vehicles must be a level 12 virgin by now.

This is a trend that will ultimately lead to safer driving, though. Right now the driver assistance programs aren’t uniformly good, but given enough time (or hopefully legislation of new safety standards) these systems will become more and more effective.

It isn’t difficult to design a system that effectively keeps your car between the lane, going the speed limit, a safe distance from the car in front of it, and automatically brake or evade if it detects a hazard ahead. We’re almost there, we just need better testing, more sensors (in contrast to Elon Musk’s profit-motivated push to do otherwise), and ideally more collaboration between the auto manufacturers and the tech industry.
