If that happens we would have a new minimum good base line. That means all other OS have to work on be better than Linux. So good competition would happen.
If steamOS finally updates again for desktops it would certainly help. I know that is literally the last thing I am waiting for before I build a PC. I am fully ready to completely build it around steam OS.

You know, for a long time I thought the argument that choosing a distro was s big blocker for people was dumb, and people should just try things like I did. As I got older, though, I recognized that if I wanted someone to actually make the change, it’s better to have a recommendation for them. The problem often with that though is they have to trust me exclusively, they don’t have the relationship with Debian or Fedora or whatever, that doesn’t mean anything to them. It’s a “devil you know is better than the one you don’t” situation. Sure, Windows sucks, but they don’t know if the alternative is better. They have to take my word on it and take the plunge.
Valve, though. They know and trust Valve. Everybody’s got Steam and generally Valve has treated us well. I probably won’t use SteamOS myself outside of my Deck, but I am INCREDIBLY excited to have a distro to recommend that gets over that trust hurdle. And even if SteamOS isn’t a perfect fit for them, it gets your foot in the door and the next distro hop is that much less scary.
I have been very happy with the work Valve’s put into Linux. It benefits us all. Gaming was always one of the biggest hurdles and it’s effectively a non-issue now thanks to Proton. Legitimately one of the few bright spots in a sea of shit lately. Yes Gaben has 6 yachts and they’re still a profit driven corp and whatnot, but in this space they are doing a great job.
Exactly. All of this concern about drivers and compatibility kind of washes away when you know Valve is standing behind it. I use elementary on an old Lenovo and Mint on an old MBpro, i’m decently comfortable with Linux. But you can bet I’d rather a steamOS experience for gaming just so I don’t have to think about it basically ever.

If I remember correctly, valve took inspiration from it for its OS. If steamOS takes too long for you, take a look at it.

Forgot how much fun customising small things like icons and sounds was - takes me back to the old days of theming Windows 98 and XP. My spouse is judging my questionable sound effect choices but IDFC it’s fun!

It’s actually one of the reasons I really enjoyed Windows ME. Usability was awful, yes, but it came with so many icons and sound packs and wallpapers and screensavers!!
Back in the day I even amassed a bunch of .WAVs cut from movies for computer sounds. It made frustrating fatal errors softer when accompanied by “Bring out yer deaaad!”
Linux really does feel like that again, except it’s actually usable.
Also I’m so glad KDE has login sounds now, so I hear the MechWarrior startup sequence whenever I log in. :)
