In Gnome, I was able to make my media keys work without hitting fn by reassigning them. I honestly don’t even remember how I did it.

Is there a way to do this in Cosmic yet?

Different question for you - What is the hardware? Some machines like my Lenovo Thinkpad can swap function and media priority by pressing FN+ ESC. Maybe there’s something to be found for your make/model.

Go to Settings> Input Devices> Keyboard> View and customize shortcuts. This is where you can modify existing shortcuts or add custom ones. There’s Volume keys and Play/Pause etc in >Keyboard shortcuts >System which you can remap. Having said, I do remember changing the need to use the function key first for media/F1-12 keys in BIOS. That reverses whatever they currently do. If you reverse it you’ll need to press function for the F keys then. So depends on what you’re looking to.

Switching function keys and media keys is exactly what I’m looking for. Unfortunately, my BIOS does not offer this feature.

Looking at your instructions, I see XFI6AudioRaiseVolume and a pen beside it which I would expect to allow me to edit it, along with an option to Add Keybinding. If I try to edit the field nothing happens. I expected to simply strike the key that I wanted assigned to that feature. If I want F6 to be volume up then what goes here?

OK, maybe not totally intuitive yet, but you actually need to type the keys in, and then press enter. For example, if you want Raise volume with Alt Shift and Up arrow you need to type Alt+Shift+Up, then press enter for it to “take”.

Thanks for the help, but it’s still not doing anything. I want F6 to be volume up. I press the key (and nothing happens) then I hit enter. Nothing appears in the keybinding field. It is empty and hitting F6 does not increase volume. No function keys or escape key enters anything into the field.

I see how other keys have been assigned, but there is no representation of a function key. Is it F6? f6? function(6)? None seem to work.
