Mastodon and other fedi services mentioned
Great video, thanks for posting! This guy articulated a lot of thoughts about algorithmic recommendations that I’ve never been quite able to form into coherent thoughts myself. I definitely understand why I decided to go all in with the fediverse or social web half a decade ago or so now.
Yeah what of the things that led me to using YouTube logged out was a small thing like getting bunch of video game spoilers if I viewed some videos of a game I was interested in or needed a walk through or tip on.
I don’t use YouTube “main” page. Only watch it from “subscriptions” page and uBlock’ed the recommendation column completely. This way I only see videos I want to watch.
Another reason I prefer stuff like newpipe and its forks and freetube on desktop is to be able to access my subscription feed with a local one to reduce YouTube account use as much as possible.
For YouTube on android you can also use grayjay or revanced to set subscriptions as your home page!
(This is about a section in the video, not just a random non-sequitur 😅)
in newpipe you don’t log into youtube. so minimal data harvesting.
I like the fork pipepipe since it has sponsorblock and also let’s you use a YouTube account only for accessing age restricted videos, since YouTube disabled that for people without accounts.
Grayjay can work that way (optionally) too. Its pretty cool there are now a number of great ways to interact with YouTube that give users more agency! 😊
Invidious is also a thing, though I haven’t used it much
