The thing that really worries me is that this might just be our 2020 moment. If our centre-left governments don’t address the bread-and-butter issues that drive the politics of resentment, these will be just speed bumps to the fascists and the next election could be catastrophic…
The scale of this victory for Australia’s centre-left party is more like a mountain range blocking the fascist army than a speed bump. It’s significant in ways that are hard to over-state.
The centre-right party has been decimated. They lost so many seats for their well known candidates no one has any idea who will lead them in forming a party out of what’s left of them. They’ve gone from something like 74 seats to less than 50, and the seats lost are in critically important places, the majority being inner-city seats.
You’re right about addressing bread-and-butter issues, it’s inevitable that we will have a liberal / national government at some time in the future, but I don’t think future LNP leaders will touch the culture war given what’s just happened.
I’m glad you guys are smarter than we are.

I really wish Americans galvanized against Trump but instead too many sat home or voted republican…
Yup, same.
Hi neighbors to the north and people on the literal other side of the planet. Good job guys!
Wish us luck or send help. Either or, I understand.
It helps that the human penis didn’t just lose the election, he got voted out of politics altogether
This is good news. Another major country that has finally rejected this push to the right. I am really hoping the failure of the Trump administration is a wake-up call to everyone. I just wish this would also make us really confront the popularity of fascism, and work on how to move away from this. I don’t have that much hope in me though, truth be told.
Honestly, congrats to Australia and Canada on pushing back successfully against fascist admirers.
Meanwhile, in Britain: we never fucking learn anything. We’re such a disappointment. I hate being British. Fuck this place.
Andrea “you selected the audience” Jenkins. Professional victim. She makes me sick. These far right nutjobs love to play the victim, it’s so pathetic.
Dude at least you’re not living in America. You’ve, as a country, learned a lot more than Americans did in eight years.
Come to Quebec, we will take an awful pinte in a taverne(pub) and be awful together.
Both lost their own seats even. Love to see it.
I can’t speak for the Aussies, but I don’t think many outside of Canada understand how against the grain our election was.
We suck at elections. We have a brutal habit of voting out, not in. We flip flop in a way you could bet the farm on. Before the tariffs and threats, it was near-impossible that the Liberals weren’t out.
Our Liberal win was predictable since Trump, sure, but that it was even close is a massive change in Canadian voting. Not just “Trump effect”, but a whole lot of nose-plugging in the voter bloc.
Edit: So why is “Great” Britain being such a Trump cuck? I think he told them he can brick all the weapons.
Wanna get together and build weapons?
It was a huge surprise here in Australia. Polling was expecting a hung parliament with neither side having a compelling victory.
Looking at the centre-right guy’s campaigning over the last few weeks he really thought he was going to win on the back of Trump-style culture-war bullshit.
Yesterday Australia decimated them in a very clear rejection of Trumpism.
Beautiful, I love it!
