I thought, as this is a pretty small community, it would be interesting to have a discussion on everyone’s favorite rosters in their region/country and what kind of coffee you like best from there.
In Belgium, I really like Mok Coffee in Leuven. They have some solid Ethiopian roasts.
In Boston area, I really like Pavement Coffee! They have a few locations around here. I’ve used their coffee for pour over and espresso and it’s great for both!
As a nice bonus, they also have great homemade bagels.
I make it to Boston like once a year I’m gonna check them out next time, got a recommendation for roast?
Honestly, their house blend is really good (Rathskeller House Blend). I also like the Genji Challa for a lighter roast.
Maine here! Precipice Coffee in Ellsworth has some incredible light roasts, and for more body Speckled Axe in Portland, wood fire roasted coffee, top notch stuff
East Bay, my main go-tos:
- Mother Tongue for approachable and easy to brew medium and medium-light roasts (they also medium-dark and dark blends, but I haven’t tried those yet)
- Hydrangea for fruit-forward alt process coffees
- Flower Child for ultralight roasts
Other cool roasters:

Nylon Coffee is skate or bicycle away from home.
They also drop freshly roasted beans on a vending machine so I can pickup beans anytime. I prefer african/floral variety so skipped their South American heavydeliver-to-home-subscription.

They’re not close to me, really, but same country.
But when I order, I get coffee that was roasted within the last couple days. Good variety of roasts, and I’ve never disliked anything I’ve tried, all high quality.

I’m a former employee. My experience there wasn’t great. Owner treated employees poorly.
OTOH you aren’t going to beat their prices anywhere else, but the main reasoning for that is they try to keep costs as low as they can and push the employees to get everything out same day to keep orders coming in. It was pretty exhausting and there was a high employee turnover.
If you’re on a budget they’re fine. If not, go elsewhere.
Well that’s a bummer to hear, maybe it’s time to check out the current options again.

I really enjoy Black and White coffee roasters of of Wake Forest, NC. They experiment with a huge variety of things. I choose from their single origin options every time I’m low. From clean to funky, I really enjoy getting a new experience with each new bag.
What does the clean/funky label mean though? I purchased from them from time to time but can’t really understand it.
I had a really hard time figuring that out as well, until I got into food fermentation. There are certain aspects of flavor and scent like boozy fruits or muskiness that are generally referred to as “funky”.
A lot of it comes down to the processing method for coffee. For natural processes where the coffee cherry’s fruit body is left on the bean during fermentation, you’re a lot more likely to get these funky notes.
For “washed” processes where the fruit body is removed before fermentation, you get more of the flavor from the coffee bean itself. These tend to be more “clean” in flavor notes.
