The occasion is the latest convening of the Human Rights Committee on the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). A U.S. delegation will face independent United Nations experts on the Committee, tasked with assessing compliance with the ICCPR, who will once again question U.S. treaty violations at Guantánamo Bay. The U.S. presentation provides an opportunity for President Biden to take a significant step forward and recognize the application of international law to the medical needs of an aging detainee population that is fast deteriorating from the effects of torture and harsh conditions.
And an attorney who argued in favor of torture at Gitmo is polling second behind trump.
Wasn't DeSantis involved in torture at Gitmo as a lawyer?
I'm not sure what you're trying to say, bro.
DeSantis was as I recall a US DOJ lawyer who was part of overseeing the "legality" of the torture of people at Gitmo.
Yeah. JAG at the time I thought, but he was the one arguing water boarding isn't torture.
Remember how everybody freaked out when Obama wanted to shut this abomination down?
Obama had to constantly walk on glass. Every decision, including the color of his suit, was scrutinized.
We are seeing the non-racist version play out with Biden as the GOP tried to work in a impeachment over… Fucking nothing?
Not nothing it's over a vague allusion in an email which I think we can all agree is an absolute smoking gun. After all it says "the big guy" which HAS to be POTUS Biden and couldn't be any of the list of other guys Hunter was doing business with because as we all know no one has ever used "the big guy" to refer to anyone else /s
Why wouldn't they? Are you going to let our rogue's gallery of terrorists with an African Muslim whose wife is secretly a man and who wears brown suits while ripping our country apart because he wouldn't say racist things about people who were being beaten and murdered due to systemic racism? What are you, crazy???
But Biden can't due it either because communism or something. Oh yeah! And he's old. You can't trust old people. You should call the cops on your grandparents because they're old.
Regardless of your opinion on the subject, it's important to note that the US does not recognize international law and is a geopolitical superpower that cannot have international law forced upon them. This in essence makes this entire thing a geopolitical version of "Who's line is it anyway?", where the results don't matter.
As an American, this is so painful.
It's bad enough we say fuck you to the metric system and a bunch of other international norms.
Not sure if it's really a test when the results don't matter. The US will keep on ignoring basic human rights, another report condemning the US will come out, no one in any positions of power will do anything meaningful, and nothing will ever change.
