“well there’s a place in Shanghai that sells fake shit”
oh no. there’s a bad place in a city of over 26 million people. not literally everyone in Shanghai is 100% honest and forthright. we have no option but to nuke shanghai then
Fake shit is awesome. If Prada or Gucci or whatever don’t want to deal with fake shit they shouldn’t sell products that can be replicated at 10% of the asking price.
Don’t know why any normal person has an interest in defending the IP of multi-billion dollar French luxury goods conglomerate.
When I went to Morocco last year I was offered so many Rolex watches and Patek Philippe watches, for the small price of only 200 Moroccan Dirham. If not for the fact that everyone else I know is madly in love with the concept of IP, then I would probably have bought a few.
Yeah, good. More eyes and minds working on research means more chances at cool discoveries and advancements.
IP ostensibly exists so people can make a living selling their inventions or whatever, which is so many steps removed from the better solution of just giving people food and a house. Fuck markets, fuck marketing, steal my shit and make it cooler than I ever could have alone. Or fuck it up and send people my way looking for the real deal. Either way I’ll still keep making that garbage because I love making it.
It would be fine if it actually compensated workers for their labor, but it’s largely just another tool for large capital to extract every last ounce of profit that they can.
The main reason for the China doesn’t respect muh IP laws thing is the good old racist Westerner belief that China is incapable of developing anything on their own, they can only rip off Western products.
As someone who has a passing interest in watches, I find watch nerds to be insufferable a lot of the time. Some mechanical watches are tiny marvels of engineering and art, but 90% of watch dudes just want to soyface over a stainless steel Rolex with no complications assembled by a machine.
I’ve basically decided I’m going to ditch my smartwatch sometime soon and get a mechanical one…or one of those 80s Casio ones. Maybe I can find a cool vintage watch. Made in the USSR.
When I go to China one day Im heading straight for one of those side alley clothes stores so I can buy Ryan (literally me) Gosling’s scorpion jacket for $10 instead of the $100+ you have to pay in the west for a wanky real version.

I love telling IP lovers that I don’t give a shit about IP.
“How would you feel if someone pirated your game?”
“I already told them to ”
A friend did tell me once that China is bad because they don’t respect IP law. I said ‘good’. They didn’t really respond.

Hence the “ostensibly” yeah. It’s a shit solution even when you give it the benefit of the doubt.

Bold saying this about the 4000 year old civilization that gave the world gunpowder and noodles
you should mention to your friend how the USA flaunted IP law for the first ~150 years of its existence
Expensive watches are one of the funniest rich people scams.
One of the most important things they pay premium for is having a less accurate watch
