Psychedelics put you in a kind of hyper-associative state, and yeah I agree the associations you make will either be nonsense or else ideas that are already in your mind anyway. They can be useful for people that are really working overtime to repress something, which is probably why society was so mind blown by them in the 60s
They can also just be really fun, and help you have extremely deep connections with the people, places and art that you love.
I feel like expecting/requiring anything more than that is ceding ground to the new age cranks of the past and the dipshit techbros who have co-opted these drugs more recently.
