You’re forgetting that the party as well as all their donors want Trump. They aren’t running an election to win, they’re running it to lose just enough to give them plausible deniability.

They love Trump because it means they don’t need to justify anything. They just need to occasionally come out and condemn him. He also pulls criticism for the system onto himself. He’s the ultimate heel.
