Obligatory warning against bait poisoning small animals who then become fed on by other larger wildlife including foxes and owls. Which then become poisoned and can die in turn. So if you choose to use poison especially those that coagulate the blood to kill, you may be killing other wildlife.
I rescued a dog a few years ago that was living by the Rio grande (river on one side, ditches farms on the never) who had been rat poisoned. She likely was eating mice and other small animals that had been poisoned.
She was in a really bad place when I found her.

I have a mouse/rat family living in my attic, but I also have a pet rodent - so I can’t trap the attic dwellers without being a massive hypocrite.
Guess they’re officially pets now too.

If you don’t clean up after the mouse/rat family in the attic then they aren’t pets.
Usually rats hang out in areas that provide them with food or shelter
Do you have a compost bin or a messy yard where it might feel comfortable?
Might be best to take care of those issues first otherwise even if you kill it another one might just move in right after.
