This is pure propaganda. According to the South China Morning Post, China is always the only great coutry in any field while all others fall behind as the SCMP is one of Beijing’s propaganda outlets.

      this too?

seems awfully negative for a propaganda mill, no?

to be clear I don’t know them and you may know something I do not but on first glance that doesn’t seem like what I would expect.

Neither of the articles you linked seem to be critical of the Chinese government at all.

I disagree on the first one, I’ll grant you the second is about north korea, an important ally, but even if they aren’t outright hardline stance negative if I was running a pro china propaganda mill why even acknowledge these things?

even if I feel pressure to acknowledge, why the front page?

          there’s this

They would be pretty terrible at their jobs if anyone could immediately tell it’s a propaganda site. They know what they’re doing. They’re good at it, your case proves it.

Show me a single article where they criticise the government on serious issues, and not just parroting what other outlets are reporting to make them appear legitimate.

If they didn’t report on these, plenty of other outlets would. Reporting everything themselves, good and bad, allows them to control the narrative more and infuse articles with just enough propaganda.

The best propaganda is the one you don’t realise is propaganda.

              what about this?

can’t that statement be used to claim any site is a propaganda mill and should be discarded? Couldn’t I do that to throw out the bbc?

                What about it?

                What statement?

                Please be specific.

Yes, the western big media is controlled by billionaires and serves their “propaganda”. Whereas Chinese media and propaganda is controlled by the government.

I want to know how it is determined whether something is a propaganda mill

there’s also this clearly negative one https://www.scmp.com/news/china/politics/article/3334442/chinas-lgbtq-community-loses-safe-spaces-blued-finka-apps-vanish

how is it known? What evidence is there? I did not have much trouble finding negative articles. What is the basis of this claim?

Sure. But they would obviously like to push for this. Whether it has a chance in hell is another thing. If they can show open stability for a decade or two while the US circles the toilet, it could happen.

I mean, the idea of a country with capital controls issuing the world reserve currency is pretty far out there. Imagine you have contracts with other countries denominated in yuan, and then you can’t get any because of political issues.

It might happen in the future, if China gets rid of capital controls, reforms its legal system, and enough time passes for trust to appear. So, maybe in 2050?

No one knows what happens in 2050. For now there is little hope for democratic change in China.

The linked article is pure propaganda. The South China Morning Post is one of Beijing’s propaganda outlets.

As an adddition: I wrote in another thread yesterday on a similar issue that I don’t understand why such sources aren’t outright banned. There are certainly also users posting such links while being unaware of their propaganda (which may be the case here, I definitely do not accuse OP of acting in bad faith), but many OPs do it deliberately. It’s aimed to undermine the community step by step until the propandists control the narratives (the second-hand intimidations in comments following China-critical posts is also part of this game). They are bad faith actors through and through.

I hear you, but you posting that TSCMP is a propaganda outlet is as good a warning as any that it is, in fact, a propaganda outlet. I’d rather allow the source so it can be ridiculed than ban it and not knowing.

Didn’t Reddit in the Before Times have that feature, where specific sources would be marked as suspicious and a warning displayed to users? That was just as useful, but didn’t require your manual intervention.

Reddit eventually banned the entire tankie community at some point.

It would be better to ban such ‘media’ - that are explicitly and dedicated propaganda outlets - as many post such links deliberately in a continuing attempt to distort reality.
