Tricky to explain exactly. Sometimes the comment button goes straight to adding a new comment rather than the post’s comments. To reach the comments I have to press it again. But because it’s not consistent sometimes I have to press it several times to reach the actual comments.
The little speech bubble has actually been a “create comment” button since it was added, I believe. (I agree – it’s a bit counterintuitive)
If you tap on a post somewhere in the selftext where there isn’t a button, it takes you to the comments.
This messes me up every single time. I click the comment icon to read the comments. But if you look in the post settings (pic below), button 1 is defaulted to “comment,” so I think it is intended to be a “leave a comment” button, as you stated. Which I do agree is counterintuitive. You have to click the body of the post to read comments. I’d prefer clicking the button to take me to the comments section and then have a “leave a comment” button if I decide to do so.
From the settings:
Especially confusing given that there’s also a “reply” button that duplicates the action of the “comment” button. It just doesn’t show the comment count.
I tried removing it so I wouldn’t be tempted to click it, but I like seeing the comment count as well.
I have this issue and I believe it is because the icons are very close together on the screen, and it is easy to accidentally press the wrong one.
Wait, are there two icons? All I see is an icon and a number.
Actually I think you are right, I just tried again and noticed clicking anywhere but not on the icon has a different action compared to clicking on the icon. So I was slightly wrong but it does seem that because the icon is small means it is easy to actually ‘miss’ it and instead end up with the wrong action.

Same, I can no longer even read comments now! I’ll try logging out. Edit nope connect is broken for me. Edit edit lol. It works if I click the icon, and then the text of the post.
The comment button is to leave a comment. To read comments on a post, you have to click the body of the post. The comment button works as intended; it’s just counterintuitive and not what you expect it’s going to do.
