That was 20 years ago. Let it go

Besides, there must be more prescient examples of Sony being shit bags.

Sony and 4 other companies basically own all music. If they can opt out, it gives them a defacto monopoly on any music generators. The AI music is still going to come and artists aren’t getting a dime either way except maybe some big names that don’t need the money anyways.

There is nothing to be gained from taking Sony’s side here. Sony is a pos company that exploits all the artists under it. It will exploit it’s data to create more profit through AI, without paying them.

Its either open source AI anyone can run at home or closed source AI that only a few companies can legally run, offered with a hefty subscription fee and censorship.

      4?

Sony, universal and Warner are the big 3. Who are you could ting as the 4th? BMG?

company that exploits all the artists under it.

In the sense that all Labour under capitalism is exploitative, maybe, but otherwise Sony is pretty well liked among its artists.

But I agree with the rest of what you said.

or an in house solution. Sony is big enough to build out their own team for it. I could see that making sense. i think Sony probably has the best bet out of the companies that own all of the music. they could be positioned to be the only ones capable of making a music “ai”

    Opts out?

Look, if we’re going to have draconian copyright laws, then we should at least be able to count on works being used without permission for AI to be verboten like all the other uses.

The difference being that Sony actually has teams of lawyers who specialize in copyright violations, including unauthorized sampling. If the AI companies are caught using Sony material this won’t go nearly as easily for them as stealing some random blogger’s writings or a small artist’s images.

They know it has. Think of this like when a porn studio uploads their own films to a torrent site, and then goes after people who download them.

Except, in this case, everyone involved are terrible human beings. So… while I will never cheer for Sony Music, I will happily root against all the AI/tech companies they go after for scraping their catalogues.

Sony is probably working on a music generator as we speak. So it’s not like Sony vs AI but Sony AI Monopoly vs Diverse AI ecosystem including FOSS.

I also consider the data stolen in either case, since Sony isn’t going to give a dime more to their artists when they either sell the data or come out with their own software. Actually, if everyone owns it and can use it to train, I see it more as sharing tbh.

I guess I might be bias, I hate these fat cat companies trying to strangle new tech so we have to lick their boots while using it.

And AI companies are crazy if they think Sony won’t makee them pay for that as soon as they can prove it.

Perhaps that’s why they are eager to do this - think of all the money they could make from lawsuits…;-)

I see Sony is going down the IBM route for AI. 40 years from now they’ll be kicking themselves in the teeth.
