For those interested in giving back to the Eastern Sierra through volunteering this summer, local conservation nonprofit Friends of the Inyo has a whole smorgasbord of opportunities to appeal to contemplative souls, those who love to get down and dirty, and others who fall somewhere in between. Following are some examples available through FOI’s Stewardship Program. Solitude Monitoring—Happening Now and Continuing through Fall Solitude monitoring is an easy way to conduct citizen science through simple data collection just by being an observer and notetaker while on your own outdoor hiking or camping adventure. No training is needed, and there is no need to deviate from your planned destination out in nature. The catch is, it has to be done at designated Wilderness areas on the Inyo National Forest.
