The lawsuit argues that the Biden administration went too far in asking schools with government-funded lunch programs not to discriminate against queer kids.

Twenty-two Republican state attorneys general are suing the Biden administration for requiring schools that accept federal funds for free lunch programs to comply with gender and sex non-discrimination rules. To put it plainly: These 22 state attorneys generals seem to think schools should be allowed to discriminate against LGBTQ kids who use the Department of Agriculture’s free lunch programs.

They want the money, but only to spend on their in-group. Dept of Ag needs to send them boxes with “thoughts and prayers” instead of money.

They have upgraded to full on fascism. Starting up culture wars, blasting propaganda to convince the country that a small group of a protected class is the root of all US problems. I’m tired of history being made in my lifetime.

Dan Savage pointed out in his podcast yesterday that in interwar Berlin, lgbtq-whatever-else-we-add-now people were more free than any time since probably ancient Rome before the Christian period.

It took about 3 years of Hitler in power to start shipping those people off to the camps. They still haven’t really recovered.

They’ve “gone too far” telling schools to feed all hungry children? It boggles my mind that these people can’t see they’re the bad guys.

To qualify for the free lunch program money, they have to not discriminate against LGBTQ+ children in the context of the program. They want the right to prohibit all LGBTQ+ children, like punishing trans kids for wearing the clothes they want, or witholding diplomas from same sex couples who attempt to attend the prom. It’s not that they want to slap the free cheese sandwiches from the hands of young LGBTQ+ kids. They want to prevent them from existing entirely, or at least tell their constituents they are trying in order to stir up votes and donations.

Everybody’s outraged at those AGs and I’m out here dumbfounded as a non-American wondering… your administration had to literally put a distinct rule in place that mandated schools to treat all kids equally? Like, such a thing had to be explicitly written down and wasn’t already covered by constitutional human rights?? God damn

Misleading title. The Biden administration is trying to tie lunch funding to schools’ gender policies and republicans are suing against that. There’s no mention of “denying lunch” to anyone.

I don’t think the article is misleading. If you take money from the federal government you have to follow their rules. This is how Medicare and other programs have always worked so there is precident. The republicans want to argue semantics on whether the funding agency or Congress have the right to make/change the rules as a stall tactic for positive change. Regardless of their disagreement, their behavior and beliefs in fascism are still abundantly clear.

The title is misleading because like you said, it is an argument over semantics. Not “Schools’ right to deny free lunch to gay and trans kids.”

Yes, true, they’re suing to be able to discriminate against queer kids in general, not just during lunch.
