Hannah Arendt had alot to say on this topic in her 1951 book “The origins of totalitarianism”. Its a scary reflection on how and why totalitarian states could arise in the first half of 1900’s. Especially eery with the current state of the world are the parts that paints a picture on how easy it can be for truth to become obfuscated and how lies can replace them to become the head-cannon of the masses.

You have to understand that there is a major difference between Russia and the USA though. Russia has been under totalitarian dictatorships since the middle age. They had a brief respite in the 90s when gangsters took over the country, and now its back to totalitarian dictatorship again. Russians has never had a chance to develop democratic values. The USA on the other hand certainly has, you just collectively decided that you hate brown people gays and trannies more than you like democracy.
