Hard agree on Prussian-style education (which had similar goals of wage slavery when it was introduced). Unfortunately the pessimist in me thinks reform will likely have to wait until after this round of fascism has run its course, but it absolutely need to be a high priority when the time comes. Understanding the layers of abstraction down to the metal is still a useful way of developing an instinct for how compilers, interpreters, languages, and algorithms etc. work and what is possible. If you ever truly need to optimize something you’ll end up descending those layers, it’s why C has inline assembly and with RAMageddon upon us optimization may well return to being a valued skill.

Which is to say you don’t need to know what you don’t need to know, until you do, and you’ll be better anyway if you can.

Education, and especially critical thinking, has been systematically gutted by conservative governments for at least 4 decades in the Western world. The goal is the absolute minimum knowledge and thinking skills (preferably without learning skills) necessary to complete the wage slavery tasks.

FWIW, I’m retired from that now, but survived a decade or so with barely a scratch and a couple of exhaust burns. Just regular bikes now, and car (for now), mores the pity, but it wasn’t the danger, it was the feeling of speed and responsiveness. They suck in traffic, but a windy mountain road? Exhilarating.

Motorcycles are fun as hell, but safety has nothing to do with loudness and everything to do with hyper situational awareness and anticipating problems. The fatality curve peaks squarely in the Dunning-Kruger zone. New riders make mistakes but usually resulting in no or lesser injuries because they’re scared and careful. It’s when people get (over) confident at a year or so that the real problems come, usually resulting in a really bad scare or death or major injury. Those that (can and do) continue become super aware of their surroundings and are mostly the safest drivers out there, and the death and accident rate goes way down.

Truthfully driving societies would be way better off if people had to start on motorbikes (or ebikes) before starting to drive around 2 tons of death, the awareness stays with you. That said, fuck cars.

None of any of that has anything to do with noise, cars are sound isolated against their own noise FFS. In aggregate cars make much more noise than motorbikes anyway, sheer numbers, it’s just that you notice the dickhead with the loud pipes more (when you’re not in a sound isolating car).

ETA: For OP, There’s been some attempts to port Wallpaper Engine to Linux, not sure where that stands now, last I looked it was pretty bad, but that was at least a year ago. Also there’s a daily NASA picture somewhere, not procedural, but cool.

It’s entirely possible to be evil and stupid, but insulated from your mistakes by money. The education and environment of the rich is highly conducive to socio/psychopathy, and selects strongly for it.

It’s been obvious for a while that scaling has hit diminishing returns (‘let’s voluntarily slow down’ like they can actually go faster) and the ‘just one more datacenter bro’ has stopped working.

Much smaller models have proven adequate for what the technology does well and the only thing stopping people moving to them wholesale is (probably illegal) market cornering. There is no moat but what they make.

At least it’s looking like there’s a good chance they won’t get to IPO and steal pension funds and crash economies as badly as they might have. SpaceX actually has worthwhile technology mixed in but xAI still managed to drag it down. Anthropic and OpenAI would go over like a lead balloon now and it’s only going to get worse as they continue to bring nothing new to the table.
