If you’re not averse to CLI and some tinkering, i think khal may suit your needs.

I think Gnome + Flatpak is a great setup for GUI only. Fedora is annoying to set up with nonfree drivers and codecs, otherwise it’s a great choice for this.

(Also, don’t try convert your friends, just wait until they come to you and ask for help installing Linux.)

I have a very similar setup and it’s been running without major hiccups for years.

I’ve been hearing the same tales of caution ever since I got my hands on that SUSE CD-ROM. I’m definitely much more careful when touching the setup compared to other stuff I self host, but it’s not impossible or anything.

It’s not something one should hurry. Read up on all the standards and documentation, set them up step by step with a throwaway domain. Avoid the big no-nos from the very beginning: Make sure to never accept relay submissions from unauthenticated users, and don’t bounce anything off-server.

It’s been a fun journey for me, and I always find it a bit sad when people who might be interested to learn are immediately discouraged. If you feel like giving it try, go for it!

The partition containing the files may be mounted readonly. Check less /etc/mtab for an ro option on that entry.

You could also resize the partition on (1) to fit on (2), then dd if=(1) of=(2)

If you’re interested in structural changes that make this sort of thing easier in the future, look into

• ZFS or Btrfs for flexible handling of subvolumes
• NixOS or GUIX for applying system configuration across machines

If I saw that folder name while using a friend’s machine I would know not to click on it to respect their privacy.

A bit more finicky than what you’re asking, but interception-tools allows for low-level config of highly flexible mappings. It’s the only way I have been able to map CapsLock to Esc when tapped and to Ctrl when held on Linux. Notably, the setting persists across all Sessions.

Speaking of arbitrary Unicode characters… what’s with the þ, out of interest?
