1·12 hours agoYeah, with the way activity pub works it doesn’t pull the old info, it just gets new posts. I know you can usually take a link to a post and search it and it’ll pull, but Friendica didn’t get anything from one of the trail links, though friendica is picky

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you think the government should regulate who can or cannot have children?
10·12 hours agoHello Lemmy user Big French Bread AT Men Going Their Own Way Lemmy DOT Org, I think you might be doing a eugenics here. Maybe you should not do a eugenics in the future. We’ve made the discovery several times that it is Bad for Many Reasons, and thus should not be done.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What news RSS feeds would you recommend for a left-leaning System Integration apprentice?
2·12 hours agoIf you find a site you like, you can put /feed at the end of the base URL and it’ll give the RSS feed about 40% of the time, since about 40% of sites use WordPress.
I have no direct recs aside that, just figured it was generally useful if anyone else posts a good site

RAM’s expensive, storage has gotten pretty cheap, at least for HDDs.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there really a technology difference between Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11 ?
1·14 hours agoThis I’d, admittedly, a shaky memory from when Win10 was first released, but while you could disable the visible portions of Cortana, I remember being unable to disable the telemetry portion. Hell I remember a custom version of Win10 being built to remove all of the tracking stuff they put in it, I think RevOS was the name?
Admittedly I haven’t used Windows at all outside of work in almost 4 years, and even then it hadn’t been my primary OS for a few years, so memory’s fuzzy

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•NHS defends cousin marriages because ‘only 15 percent lead to birth defects’English
32·20 hours agoWhy did you bring birth defects up if marriage is the concern? You don’t get birth defects from a wedding.
Also in basically every state where it’s illegal to marry your cousin it’s illegal to have sex with them, too.
(When I say basically I mean I’m too tired to check half of the US’s laws on this, and the source I’m using says sexual contact is generally not permitted)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Gamers, how complicated is it to play games? (setup question)
12·20 hours agoEhh… I’ve yet to get a virus from pirating games. Only virus I’ve ever gotten was on my childhood PC when my uncle was watching some sketchy adult content. I was just playing neopets at the time, so I doubt it was me
Kernel level anticheat is mostly in MMORPGs, which is my preferred genre, though there are some games without it. Notably Final Fantasy XIV, and Guild Wars 2 have no anticheat in the client at all. It also depends on the anticheat how much I’m willing to put up with it. XIGNCode is a hard no from me, but nprotect, and easyanticheat are both whatever IMO. Pick your threat model though.
The most complicated game is Wurm Online, and that’s because there’s something going on with my desktop where it just. Crashes. Constantly. I can usually get it to stay on indefinitely after 8 restarts, but it’s annoying.
Consoles are only future proof if you consider that eventually games will stop being released for them, and parts will stop being made. Sure you’ll be able to play the games you already own on them forever, but… Also your PC will be able to run any game on them forever, at least until the hardware degrades, but that also goes for consoles.
If you want to go fully no DRM, GOG is your best bet for most games. Itch.io is also there, but it’s mostly indie games, which isn’t everyone’s scene.
Overall I don’t think of it as complicated, but I’ve been PC gaming consistently for… 25 ish years? I’m largely used to it.

22·21 hours ago25 US stated by my count, but also I let my ethics develop separately from the law. There’s been a lot of very questionable things in the law in the past, and as such it’s not exactly a trustable guide for ethics imo.
That’s not the point you presented here, though. The point you presented here was birth defects.
The point you brought up there I still object to, though. While there can be power dynamics between cousins, it’s fairly rare for those to continue into adulthood, and I have long taken the stance “I don’t believe the state should have a say in what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home.”
The line that’s been drawn is people allowing their disgust to inform policy at best. If it were based in anything else the policies would be different.

52·23 hours agoI don’t know, but do you also think it should be illegal to have a child if you’re over 40?
Do you also think that it should be illegal for people with heritable disabilities to have children?
Because your argument isn’t anti-cousin-marriage, it’s anti-birth-defects, and there are a whole lot more sources of them than incest, and ones that are way more common.
Also, yes, preventing people from having children who would have birth defects dates back to the original eugenics movement, it is literally a core belief of the eugenics movement.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•When I first heard of the term "nuclear family", I thought it was referring to the fact that 20 century families had to deal with the constant fear of losing their family to a nuclear bomb.

24·14 hours agoI… Don’t even actually see the point here? I have access to the internet, and know how to use a search engine? You can literally look that up on Wikipedia, are you trying to imply that because I looked at a Wikipedia article for this post that I want to fuck my cousin?
What a strange outlook on obtaining knowledge. If just knowing what states it’s legal in, something that takes about 30 seconds to find, makes you a cousin-fucker, wouldn’t that make you one too? Or is it just the first person in the thread doing it?

34·1 day agoWhat, persuasive about not wanting to fuck my cousin? I don’t particularly care if anyone thinks I do. If I did, I wouldn’t be in a thread about fucking your cousin saying I think it’s fine to fuck your cousin. I know that people will make assumptions about my sex life based on my position alone.
If you mean about the arguments against it being eugenics, I care more about that point, because they are, and eugenics is bad.

21·1 day agoFun fact: Most of the places it’s legal in are blue. Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina are the only red states it’s legal in, out of 17 total states. If we include states where it’s conditionally legal (usually based on age/fertility) it’s Utah out of 7 states.

76·1 day agoSolid observational skills! They have, however, failed you. Just because someone is pointing out that certain arguments don’t actually hold water doesn’t mean they engage in the activities the arguments are against.
I just don’t care if two cousins wanna fuck because the arguments against it are things that I’m actively opposed to, or don’t apply to the situation.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you do a lot of meal prep for your lunches at work, what do you do?
1·1 day agoI used to do a lot of pasta, but I stumbled upon a master recipe that works so damn well. It’s based on chicken rice, which is a dish seen… Basically everywhere? This is all by weight:
- 1 part meat
- 2 parts veggies
- 2 parts rice/pasta
- 5 parts water
- Season to taste
You only need 4 parts water, but I find the rice comes out better with 5.
I have yet to find a combination that tastes bad. Some things to try:
For jambalaya use half sausage, half chicken for the meat, then use a mix of onion+green bell pepper+celery for the veg. Brown the meat, throw the veg in until it’s soft, then throw the rice and water in.
Toast the rice first! Don’t wash it if you do or it won’t toast right. Oil in a pan over medium heat until the rice is brown.
Most commonly I use spam as the meat, since I don’t always have chicken on hand. Usually have to undersalt it for this.
Overall I use peas and carrots most for the veggies, since they come really small. Broccoli also works.
Use frozen veggies! They taste fine, they’re just as nutritious as fresh, and they save a lot of time
Season salt (any kind, I use Tony Chacheres) is an amazing thing.
If you want a side with it I usually do Greek yogurt+fruit. Ton of protein (helps keep you full longer, great if you can’t snack on the job), plus some fiber from the fruit. I use fruit canned in juice for it. Just strain the fruit first. A small can of fruit in a pound of yogurt is how much I do. Put it into containers and you’re done!

Haven’t had it personally, but my ex had a funny story about their ex spouse:
Ex (we’ll call them ME) was a porn star for a long time, and still is last I heard. They’d always done a lot of fetish stuff, because it pays. Feet pics, I helped them buy pudding for a porn shoot once, lotta stuff.
Anyway, their ex had a thing for feet, which ME was fine obliging. However, one day ME was scrolling through the pics on their phone, showing their ex some of their older work. The ex spouse tells them to stop, and pulls their own phone out to show EB… The exact same picture of EB’s feet on their own phone that they’d downloaded 10 years prior, and kept.
