Wait, what drama did I miss? Why would people block Lemmy.ml any more than other instances?

The Lemmy devs are the admins of Lemmy.ml. They’re communists that treat Lemmy.ml as their personal fiefdom (which by design it is) where only opinions they endorse are allowed. They supersede community mods to do this. I’ve had comments calling out Hamas and Iran labeled as “hate speech” because in .ml world nobody aligned against the west can do anything wrong. I have no problem with anyone being a communist, but I draw the line at people that glorify/make excuses for authoritarianism.

FWIW as a lemmy.ml user I haven’t seen any of these issues. Many people lump lemmygrad.ml in with lemmy.ml; the devs have previously stated that they take a hands-off approach and allow pretty much everything in the latter, while enforcing Tankie-dom in the former. That’s apparently the reason why lemmygrad was made in the first place. The devs are crazy, not stupid, and understood that having the (former) main instance be a bunch of Stalin memes would hurt adoption.

That being said, I probably wouldn’t re-create my account here if I had to. Potential for Soviet apologia just isn’t worth it. Plus, there’s so many new awesome communities now!

No joke, this comment was deleted by as hate speech, you can check the modlog:

Hamas is a problem too and funded through Iran so I think they’d still be an issue even without the settler bs

This is just one example, I’ve had other (imo) pedestrian comments deleted. I’m a bigot for pointing out the objective reality that Iran financially supports Hamas? I guess it’s cool that Hamas murdered thousands of people? I’m convinced they want Lemmy.ml to be their instance to nudge people to towards their politics subtly. It’s not a healthy dynamic for a server, imo. No shade your way, plenty of normal people on .ml.

Completely agree, that’s a fair take. I just feel like, assuming that was their intent, it quickly became impossible after the exponential explosion of the userbase six months ago. Also, I don’t feel like many internet leftists are super susceptible to Stalinism, seems more like a diversionary receptacle for discontented liberals and fascists imo. Guess we’ll see if I get shadowbanned, lol.
