FFS, why don’t you lean into this conversation with your own take instead? They depress wages for Americans/permanent visa holders and they’re exploitative towards the ones holding the H1B Visa. There’s an easy progressive case to make to get rid of this entire visa class, and find some common ground with some of the frustrations of the Trump base who will be looking for an alternative when Trump inevitably betrays his promises.

Hell yes, thank you. I got so fed up decades ago having fellow liberals give me side-eye and want to accuse me of being a racist when talking about the shitshow that is H-1B…if they do this again at this key point, I’m going to be so pissed off.
Whenever a partisan paper seems to miss the kill shot with the headline but not the article you can pretty much guarantee it was on purpose. Corporate Democrats love a good H1B thrall just as much as Elon Musk.
I think there is a case to be made for H-1B visas for extremely advanced fields with rarified knowledge, which was the original intent for the visa. It needs major reform at least, but I would not object to just removing it given how pervasive the corrupt use of it is.
If someone had specialised skills that are in demand, they should be granted the freedom of permanent residency and not be tied to one specific employer. The whole concept is exploitative.
Here’s an idea: for every h1b visa person you employ, pay a visa tax, which is double the salary of that job.
Can’t find a skilled web dev in the US for $100k? Pay $100k for a visa worker, and $200k into a tax used to either help visa holders, help US citizens train up, or both.
It’s not exactly what you’re saying but the current system does make it more expensive to hire a visa holder because they have to have entire hiring and legal teams to ensure compliance and stuff.
Often businesses just offset the visa recipient’s salary by these costs, and in doing so drive down salary averages, defeating the point you’re making about visas being a more expensive solution to labor.
They legally cannot do that and have to pay market rate. And I can tell from personal experience that they are not giving lower offers to immigrants for jobs that qualify for H1B visas. Often the hiring companies end up paying a little more because there might be consulting companies in the middle that take a cut of the immigrant salaries. The consulting companies exist because they simplify hiring for employers and create more consistent employment for immigrants as their visa is generally tied to the employer. So the consulting company becomes a consistent employer across different projects at different companies. And for the actual hiring companies it creates a simpler workflow where they just tell the consulting company who they need and consulting company provides employees regardless of immigration status

Um, I don’t think it’s a distraction so much as direct evidence on how these robber barons are going to fuck over people that are already in a precarious position when it comes to their jobs…people told to get educated, upskill, etc…are going to have jobs taken away thanks to these asshats.
Doesn’t mean Democrats shouldn’t be running with this and putting out the message that Republicans want immigrants to take their jobs and let them year the party apart.
