The guy who empties a trash can into a garbage bin is not typically called a “garbage man”. That’s a “janitor”.

According to Wikipedia, other common names for the job we in the US commonly call “garbage man” are:

trashman (US): Not better than “garbage man”

waste collector/garbage collector: Sounds like somebody with a strange hobby.

dustman (UK): Sounds like a Megaman villain.

binman (UK): Probably my favorite among the common names.
