Why do the instances keep going down? It makes me think that this is not a reliable social network, but the alternatives are not as good.

    Best bet is probably to create an account on Lemmy and another on Kbin. Not only is it simply not likely for two instances to go down, but they’re also different platforms, so further decreases the likelihood. And you can see all the same content.

      For the uninitiated, there are hundreds (thousands?) of instances you can have your account on. Honestly if your account is on one of the huge ones like lemmy.world you’re kinda fucking up. Not only is it slow and under attack, it’s likely on the other side of the world from you. Make an account on a small nearby instance for a much better experience. Then when lemmy.world goes down you’re not fucked. /rant
