The consumption is the point. They just want candy not a meal. They want fucking marvelslop not Cinema.

Inb4 let people enjoy things, the mindset on display is a perfect member of capitalist society. A mindless consumption machine.

Please be fucking normalllll and yes let people enjoy things

Don’t hate on fans and Marvel’s popularity because the movies lack cinematic sophistry or is artistically stagnant

Hate because it’s propaganda and infests people with brainworms

          • Which is why “let people enjoy things” is a meaningless statement when separated from its original context, which is people insulting randos over random shit, which is exactly what is happening here.

It got perverted and used for generic treat defense, as all things eventually do, and of course was rendered completely meaningless in the process, but this does not justify the behavior of attacking those who do not deserve it, instead merely demonstrating how depraved liberals are and to what stretches they will go to prevent their blatant fascist tendencies from being unveiled.

When viewed through this lense, almost all modern usage of this term (notably except the top level comment you replied to) is completely meaningless.

But in this case, it is actually being used in its original intention, or, if it is not it’s original intention (idk I’m no internet history expert), it’s at least being used in a novel and unique way.

This is not “treat defense”. Me and the top level content have no treats they are even defending. Instead, it is “treat criticism”, a criticism of the “treat” of attacking and berating internet randos for no reason. That is a legitimate criticism, and is not a thought terminating cliche. It is a legitimate concern over the absurd toxicity present.

Unlike your very different action of totally not insulting me here.

I HAVE NO CONNECTION TO MARVEL, I’VE SAID THAT SO MANY TIMES?

WHAT FUCKING TREAT AM I DEFENDING??

BECAUSE RIGHT NOW IT LOOKS LIKE THE ONLY “TREAT” IM DEFENDING IS MY OWN FUCKING DESIRE FOR INNOCENT RANDOM PEOPLE NOT TO BE INSULTED AND IF THAT MAKES ME A TREAT DEFENDER THAN IM FUCKING PROUD OF IT

IF HAVING FUCKING EMPATHY, EVEN FOR RANDOM FUCKERS WHO LIKE SHOWS I HATE, MAKES ME A TREAT DEFENDER, THEN I’LL BE A TREAT DEFENDER AS MUCH AS I FUCKING WANT, AND YOU’LL FUCKING DEAL WITH IT

Honestly, it does seem everyone in this stupid fucking “discourse” as a certain “point past legitimacy” that they hold. The thing enjoyers think any criticism of the thing they enjoy is illegitimate. The enjoyers of criticizing the things thing enjoyers enjoy think any counter-criticism to their criticism are illegitimate. The enjoyers of criticizing the enjoyers of criticizing things the thing enjoyers enjoy think any counter-counter-criticism is illegitimate…

Everyone seems to think the buck stops exactly right wherever they are and everyone beyond needs to shut up. But that’s not really how discussions of media work is it? Everyone it constantly making argument and counter arguments that lead into other arguments.

It isn’t “thought policing” to tell someone to not shit on someone for doing something completely innocuous that probably 90% of people here have done because their friends and family are still obsessed with it

So your answer is apparently to call me “really stupid” for doing that with three question marks, all while presuming I was insulting you, all because you apparently feel so defensive about your treats that criticisms of those treats (or maybe even the bad parts of their fandom) are taken like personal attacks.

It isn’t “thought policing” to tell someone to not shit on someone for doing something completely innocuous that probably 90% of people here have done because their friends and family are still obsessed with it

Actually it kind of is here, especially how you frame it with such excessively ungenerous presumptive portrayal, and declared what you think I thought was “really stupid” with three question marks. You don’t want me to share what I think here, and maybe even don’t want me to think it at all. In other words, you apparently do want my thoughts policed.

I didn’t make the edited comic, or that “when thought policing backfires” title for it. But considering how you just reacted to it, maybe it’s on to something.

I have literally not watched a single marvel movie in what is likely a year and last time I did it was probably because of my family. I literally can’t remember, and I couldn’t give a single fuck about the brand and in fact hate literally all of it and wish it would die.

You are the one acting defensive about having a treat criticized. I have absolutely no stake in Marvel. I do not care about Marvel. What I do care about is my comrades not being asses for no reason, and that is what I’m concerned about. And, unlike consuming terrible slop, insulting people who don’t deserve it is directly harmful behavior.

The point isn’t that it isn’t a form of verbal suppression (yes, it is, yes, I do think insults against people over things that are not actually harmful should in fact be suppressed), but that it is a blatantly silly thing to consider bad because it is literally just normal social behavior.

Like, honestly, yeah, I’m thought policing, and I’m fine with it. If your treats being criticized and thought policed pisses you off so much maybe you shouldn’t consume them. Or are you going to tell me to just let you enjoy things?

This isn’t freeze-peach town. I don’t give a single fuck if what I’m saying is “authoritarian” or whatever. Unironically, it would make me much happier if you and everyone else were to think of these things in terms of social systems instead of hating random people who mean no harm and probably just like shit because their meemaw said Thor was cool or something, and I am not ashamed of that.

Edit: and I am sorry about the smuglord tone of my first comment, and somewhat this one. It isn’t even remotely acceptable. My only excuse is that it seems to be the only way to get through to people online, in my experience. I do respect you and part of why I even bring this up is because I respect you and the rest of the people I’m criticizing over this. I wouldn’t care nearly as much if you were all just random people, but I know for a fact that this can be a kind and caring community and is very often, and I despise what I see as an obstacle to that not being taken seriously, or worse, dismissed out of hand because of the superficial absurdity of it. I know it’s weird to give a fuck about what a bunch of people on the internet say about someone I don’t care about online, but I know that this case is innocent and innocuous enough that it would be trivial for that anger to turn around and target both myself or basically anyone else on here. I don’t want that to be this community and it’s sad to me that I don’t even know how to really communicate that feeling without it being drowned out and lost in the sea of internet irony poisoning and detachment. I will not respond further until I return from logging off, and again I am really sorry about how rude I have been. Thank you for reading this massive text block.

Please, I’m trying to be open here, I really don’t want this to just become an exchange of insults or anger. I’m only arguing about this because I care about your opinion and it legitimately scares me that people like you could just… stop caring about supporting or even being nice to me just because I said something cringe or weird

I know I was hostile. That wasn’t ok. But I was scared, I was angry, and I don’t really know what else to say, I can’t apologize or make it up to you in any way more than I already have. Owning up to it is good and a good start and I sincerely respect that. Yes, that is what I tend to call treat defense and the way you blew up at me from the start seemed like a textbook example of it. It’s not a fatal error and I think it’s best to just accept that you did react the way you did and just back down from that from there.

      same-picture

Art consumption is a form of literacy and the vast majority of people are functionally illiterate. This makes capitalist propaganda easy and communist propaganda harder.

Edit: I still don’t blame people for consuming their slop, though. The anti-capeshit vs let-people-enjoy-things discourse is just the most inflammatory version of much more interesting conversation.

It is pretty scary just how many easy to consume slop works are about the nonpolitical concept of very special people that are born with a unique epic destiny that must (sometimes secretly) police over and rule over the unwashed unruly masses to maintain the status quo against bad people that want to change it, or for the Vincent Adultmen, how common it is to present the Adults In The Room Making The Hard Decisions and Getting Shit (atrocities, usually) Done.

It’s such a standard framing, yeah. Same with the “follow your dreams and never give up” bullshit that amounts to “commodify everything that makes you unique and quietly endure the harrowing conditions you’ll face along the way”. It’s the grindset. It’s capitalist realism. It’s a motor for the reserve army of labor. And importantly, it’s false consciousness. You can essentially encourage the portion of your population who’s most likely to rise up (young educated adults) to instead spend that time dreaming of becoming a small business owner or an artisan. And you can do so without provided them a material base for those ambitions. 1 in 1000 makes it and the working class loses twice.

What an individualistic attitude towards it.

Do you really think these individual, random fuckers have any power over what kind of content they are really exposed to, what kind of media is socially acceptable?

Yes. I also despise marvel and will say that whenever I want. But the random individuals that make it up aren’t deserving of actual hatred or mockery for enjoying it. Their friends enjoy it. Their friends of friends enjoy it. I’m not saying we should just “let people enjoy things”, I’m saying that our criticisms of the things need to be of the things themselves, and not “infantile mannerisms” or weird moralistic statements about people who fundamentally only really watch this stuff because all their friends talk about it and they want to be fun and cool to their friends.

It is certainly your right to despise others and have whatever feelings you have about them, but it is not your right to express hatred or ridicule them and it is not revolutionary or cool to do it all the time. We are not freeze-peach liberals who “say whatever we want” because it feels good to dunk on the “unenlightened, unwashed masses”. We are socialists who are supposed to actually understand those masses and give them what they want. We are not preachers, we are teachers.

The criticism of Marvel has, frankly, reached a stagnant stage. It is not intense enough. This anger directed towards individual “Disney adults” is fundamentally a misdirection, an individualization of a social issue, a complete stop in the development of any truly revolutionary ideas that could come from our line of criticism.

Yes, dunking on libs who like marvel is extremely fun. But it’s just as brainless and non-constructive as the movies themselves. We don’t actually learn anything from it. We don’t help anything. We like to think we’re decreasing the power of the Marvel panopticon ever so slightly, but our online negging is likely meaningless in the face of the bare truth that these people barely have anything else to live for. Without Marvel slop, they would have nothing, live in a completely barren world with no color or purpose. And it is tempting to despise them for that, to say that we are different because some element of ourselves makes us special and superior.

But what element? Is it mental, physical?

I don’t think so. I think it’s all about social circumstance, and while I might be uniquely lib for this, the magic of bullying people is sort of taken away when I realize that I’m not actually doing some virtuous, revolutionary act. It just feels like kicking a malnutritioned puppy.

Nope. Nobody has any power over what conditions they arise in, doesn’t change the end results of what they are. I wouldn’t spare a nazi the wall because of the conditions of 20th century Germany molded them, and I would condemn a zionist even if they were born in Israel and brainwashed into it. You can critique individual symptoms and representations of the odious whole. Obviously those are much more serious crimes, but the same logic applies.

But the random individuals that make it up aren’t deserving of actual hatred or mockery for enjoying it.

You obviously haven’t seen me post at all, literally every time some sort of mockery about fundamentally harmless behavior comes up I’ve gotten pissed about it. Literally the only reason I don’t bring it up all the time is because people usually restrain themselves to only dunking on absolute ghouls for being absolute ghouls.

Also watching shitty superhero movies is not even remotely comparable to being a fucking active murderer of minorities, Jesus Christ

turning all of the art of film into artless fascist dreck is not harmless, and it’s turned a generation of adults into blithering children. It’s as contemptible as adults who still frame their worldview in harry potter. It’s childish and obscene and reflective of deep problems in society, as I said.

I said the severity of the crimes is not the same.

Dorks can have exactly one (1) artistically bankrupt mega franchise that they enjoy, mostly because it made an impression on them as a child.

I’m stuck with Star Wars, and I’ll have to live with hoping something like Andor season 1 to happen again for the rest of my life.

They just want candy not a meal. They want fucking marvelslop not Cinema.

shrug I don’t know why you need to get on people’s cases about this. They’re equating this to cheap candy bars, ffs. They know. We know they know.

    Inb4 let people enjoy things

But you still should. There’s no point in ragging on folks for liking a thing you don’t like, even if we can say that it’s cheap and lazy and bad at an objective level.

Given how the franchise has slumped since Infiniti War, it feels like you’re kicking a dead horse. The production of these films is getting slowed down as their ratings tank out. “The Marvels” brought in a pathetic $6.6M its opening day. The Barbie Movie and Oppenheimer both proved people are interested in different slop. Finding the last guy on Reddit who is still into this shit and yelling at them… like, why, bro?

No, everything has to be serious at all times and we cannot find any humor in the absurdity of hell world. The last time I smiled was on August 19th, 1991. I wear a dirty ushanka at all times, do not shave, and only take cold sponge baths because hot running water is bourgeoisie decadence. Every day at exactly noon I have the same meal of an expired Maoist MRE I store in a pit covered in old issues of a revolutionary newspaper. I sleep in a bed made of flags from every failed revolution so that they are never forgotten. In the evenings I stare at a picture of vodka by candlelight, but I do not allow myself to drink because there is nothing to celebrate. Every local org has banned me after I attempted to split it by assassinating the leadership. There is no plumbing in my house I shit in a brass bucket with a picture of Gonzalo and Deng french kissing in the bottom of it. My house is actually an overturned T34 in an abandoned junkyard in Wisconsin. I have a single friend in this world and it is a tapeworm named Bordiga that I met after ingesting spoiled borscht on 9/11 in the ruins of building 7 (I blew it up after finding that a nominally leftist NGO inside of it wasn’t sufficiently anti-imperialist, the attacks on the world trade center were a perfect revolutionary moment for me to enact direct praxis against liberalism). My source of income is various MLM schemes in the former soviet bloc that have been running for so long no one remembers who I am, they just keep sending money. I have not paid taxes since McGovern lost the Democratic nomination for president and my faith in electoralism died more brutally than my childhood dog after it got into an entire jar of tylenol. I own 29 fully automatic rusted kalashnikovs and three crates of ammunition entirely incompatible with them or any other firearms I own. My double PHD in marxist economics and 18th century Swiss philosophy (required to understand Engels) sits over the fireplace of my home, my fireplace is a salvaged drum from a 1950s washing machine that was recalled for locking children inside of it. I chose that washing machine model on purpose because I am anti-natalist. During the latest BLM protests I firebombed a Nikes outlet in the middle of a peaceful candlelit vigil. William F Buckley and I wrote hatemail to one another for 47 years until my final letter gave him an aneurysm. The only water I drink is from puddles. George Lucas and I dropped acid together during an MKULTRA southern baptist summer camp and he went on to write the movie Willow about our time together. The best way to test whether an electrical wire is live is to drool on it and shrimp salad is racist. You can make an IED out of potassium and the instructions are online thanks to Timothy McVey, who was actually a committed antifascist communist slandered by the deep state as part of operation condor. Every time a liberal files a restraining order against me, I carve a mark into the wall. I am running out of walls. When Amerika finally collapses I will be ready to lead the revolution. I am very smart and people like being around me.

When did we all start “consuming” everything? I’ve never consumed a media in my life. I’ve watched a lot of movies and tv shows. I’ve read a number of books, magazines, and newspaper articles. I’ve played lots of games. But why do people insist on using capitalist slang to describe their own habits. It’s bad enough they call everyone “CONSOOMERS” for everything in state media, but why bring it on yourself too?

I disagree, they are perfect words for describing capitalist commodities and our mindless absorption of them as a society. To use other words would be to conceal the fundamental truth of their use and our relationship to the world as capitalist subjects. Capitalist subjects consume commodities, they slurp the whole world up until nothing is left. Accept what we are don’t hide it

Everybody is sincere posting about people enjoying stuff. But nobody’s talking about how you could possibly feel satisfied after eating a whole bag of candy, instead of feeling like dogshit.

Those small bags of crisps they have in Asia > disgusting Western 300 grams Lays.

Americans have way too much sugar, I was talking to a yank irl and he said he would have over a liter of soft drink a day. ??? I honestly thought he was joking.

Also, I know Brits put sugar in tea (gross, but you do you), and then I had American tea. What the actual fuck.

you’re supposed to have sugar in tea proportional to the extent your job involves manual labour. It’s a weird custom that dates back to when tea replaced alcohol as the drink of choice and then loads of people suddenly were missing the caloric content of alcohol

That sounds off as a Chinese person since we A: did not add calories to tea via milk, B: did not add calories to tea via sugar and C: had just various famines from antiquity till the 20th century, and didn’t adopt sweetening tea for caloric intake

I still feel like we probably would have adopted adding sugar to tea to fight caloric deficiency somewhere in the last few thousand years if that made a measurable difference. Especially considering sugar cane is native to India and south east Asia, it was more abundant and accessible in Asia than western Europe.

I’m not saying sugar doesn’t add calories, I just don’t think it would be that big of an improvement.

A parallel I can think of is how Turkish cevze coffee is traditionally most often unsweetened, much like Italians drink espressos after breakfast, but the UK/US will have sweetened coffee as the norm. The beverage which serves a social and almost ritualistic function has been adapted and turned into another marketable treat in the Anglosphere.

Edit: either that or the working class in western Europe and UK/CAN/AUS had access to such shitty quality coffee and tea grit that they have to make it palatable with sugar, and then the claws of capitalism came along and turned it into a marketable treat

well sugar does have a lot of calories. And China never had the specific situation of switching from a high calorie drink to a low calorie one suddenly

well they wouldn’t have had fine china. Tea in the UK is not a very fancy drink unless you’re posh.

one of the big reasons tea was adopted is boiling water makes it safe to drink and it replaced using weak alcohol for that purpose

Personally, I’m on the “don’t be an asshole” side of things when it comes to people with very awful, but ultimately harmless taste in entertainment.

But also enjoying slop is not an identity. If it really hurts your feelings when someone dunks on you for legitimately enjoying Spiderman XXVI: A Megaverse at Home or whatever it was called, then you should probably take a closer look at the unhealthy way you’re internalizing your connection to media consumption.

I wouldn’t partake in dunking on someone for that, mostly because I kinda get it. I also like to shut my brain off every once in a while and enjoy mindless fast-foodified entertainment slop, but if someone wanted to roast me for it I’d probably laugh at myself with them. (Note: I always pirate that shit, I wouldn’t be caught fucking dead paying for it and I will always relentlessly mock pay pigs for being some of the most boot addicted people on this Earth)

The studios will probably give it a rest, and then bring them back with a plan to run them for the exact amount of time for a maximum profit - like all those Netflix shows getting dropped after two seasons.

I despise what Marvel has done to the movie industry but I have literally no reason to despise or hate those who continue to watch the movies. As long as it sucks it sucks. This one person not watching the movie doesn’t magically make it not have any control over the industry, and literally bullying people for watching it is not some sort of cool gamer move. It’s just weird and antisocial. Bullying works with veganism, yeah, but that’s because most people don’t have entire social networks that are partially dependent on eating meat. These people are literally addicted to Marvel. Removing it from their reality would be akin to just making them unable to participate in… maybe at least 60% of conversations their friends have. It’s more akin to trying to bully someone into not eating around other people- You’re not going to be able to do it no matter how hard you try, not without removing their incentivize to in the first place (socialization).

What bothers me is that shitting on people for liking X thing has become it’s own kind of “treat”, a form of slop that people absolutely shit themselves in anger over when someone points out how it’s flawed. Like, Jesus Christ, I am not saying that you can’t criticize the movies I’ve already criticized like 4 times in this thread alone, just maybe don’t be an asshole to random people you’ve never met who are doing nothing wrong? Criticizing works of art, hell, even insinuating that the mere consumption of it is problematic, does not require you to actually consider those who consume it as bad people and in most cases they just blatantly aren’t.

Watching these sorts of weird, reactionary-tasting anger over X person who consumes Y thing is like watching people complain about water flooding all their crops, so they shout at the waterfall until it stops moving. It lacks any sort of analysis, it’s like a ironically and hilariously mindless substitute for actual concern over what these movies do to people

I understand we need to vent our emotions somehow, but actual systemic critique, analysis, and finding solutions to how Marvel has entrenched itself into society is right there and if you aren’t going to do it just because it’s too hard, and would prefer to do something more mindless, then… Yeah! Fair! But maybe don’t criticize other people for not always consuming leftist theory instead of brainless slop, then.

    Edit: I’m just tired.

Ok I was trying to be vulnerable and you’re just going all smuglord in here.

What the fuck is wrong with you? Do you have any empathy for other human beings whatsoever?

Seriously, Jesus fucking Christ, do some self crit. I was trying to be patient and I still stand by that the way I said what I said was toxic and bad, but holy shit stop being a smug asshole and just… actually care about another person for once. I was angry at you because I legitimately cared about you not being an asshole because I respected you. I don’t see any reason to continue respecting you if you’re not going to be willing to step back and consider why I’m saying what I’m saying here.

Not everyone who gets angry is doing “treat defense”. I’m a human being and the reason I’m getting angry is because I’ve seen numerous times now of people just completely disregarding that what I’m saying has any value whatsoever, while never really explaining why I shouldn’t care. Do you think I just shouldn’t care about how people act to each other online?

Do you really think I’m so stupid that I know that will be used to repress any weird mannerisms or behaviors I accidentally have the moment they show up? I know how this works. I’ve been autistic for literally decades. It’s the same shit people pulled with the furry fandom, it’s the same shit people pulled with videos of kids getting angry online, it’s the same shit people on the internet pull every single day so they can legitimize their desire to repress and control others.

Yeah, I’m pissed about it. Yeah, if the “treat” I’m defending is my own ability to be myself online in a space I like without being ridiculed or made fun of because I made a single misstep and acted “cringe”, then I am a “treat defender”. The fact you can’t even try and realize that the person on the other side of the screen isn’t even trying to defend any piece of media is the most frustrating part of this. I don’t care about marvel, I don’t care about this person’s obsessive interest with marvel, I don’t care about any of that. I just don’t like how toxic this community has become and it’s been getting more and more frustrating with people basically fucking gaslighting me every time I bring up how uncomfortable it is.

I didnt try to dodge any of it. I acknowledged all of it I could think of and left it up explicitly because I wanted to make sure anything I didn’t leave up was left for people to see when I apologized.

What are you even talking about? I have no idea what you think I’m dodging. I know you were linking my comment over and over but I just… didn’t respond because I thought I had already covered it with what I said. I know that’s a dumb way to apologize but I mean I’m not really that smart

I know I should have responded to that individually, at least in retrospect, but my apology was over my general tone and everything. I didn’t know you were angry at me over the three question marks specifically and thought you were just angry about them as an example of the tone I used.

which is people insulting randos over random shit

              reactionary-tasting anger

              This is not “treat defense”.

There’s a lot more already in this thread if you just scroll up what you’ve already said to me, but insulting me from the start in your very first reply and then dodging that insult while making accusations and presumptions about what I said in the worst possible light makes it hard to generously interpret things at this point.

I didn’t know you were angry at me over the three question marks specifically

Being called very stupid from the start was the issue and it got worse when you did rhetorical backflips to simultaneously say you didn’t insult me from the start while continuing to insult me while framing what I said (or presumably, previously said because it’s not even in this thread) in the above quoted ways.

IF HAVING FUCKING EMPATHY, EVEN FOR RANDOM FUCKERS WHO LIKE SHOWS I HATE, MAKES ME A TREAT DEFENDER, THEN I’LL BE A TREAT DEFENDER AS MUCH AS I FUCKING WANT, AND YOU’LL FUCKING DEAL WITH IT

I don’t think anything I say after this point is going to help. I’m not changing my position, especially not now. While I still respect what you admitted and showed previously, almost immediately after that you started all-caps demonstrating more of the same hostility you had replied to me with, in this thread, from the start.

Does “treat defense” mean something other than someone vehemently defending some sort of piece of media?

I suppose the definition can be expanded to outright reactive hostility toward even the idea or possibility of media criticism and taking it up as a personal cause, as if one is in personal danger if that entertainment product is criticized. Calling me “really stupid” because I posted an edited webcomic you clearly didn’t like and going on and on from there, all because I do believe people should let people not enjoy things (and yes, criticize them).

You apparently didn’t like that the edit used the term “thought police.” I didn’t make the edit, I just used material on hand. But this exchange so far has in some ways only hardened my position about how unfortunately and excessively defensive some people can get at even the idea of their entertainment getting criticized.

the media people consume influences/reflects their personalities and attitudes. if you are consuming something ‘just because others are consuming it’ it betrays a lack of critical thinking, and a kind of bandwagon effect attitude. if people are ‘literally addicted’ to Marvel then it is by your own admission very problematic. the solution to addiction isn’t to just keep letting the addict use without any effort to control and reduce usage. that 60% of their conversations could ideally be used for something beautiful or useful, but instead is squatted by bland, meaningless, corporate garbage with zero artistic integrity or cultural value. corporate slop is, let me be perfectly clear, a weapon of psychological warfare forced upon the masses by corporate media campaigns. media isn’t some kind of utopian democracy where the ‘best’ thing or ‘naturally/objectively most popular’ thing ‘wins’ the grand popularity contest; media attitudes are manufactured by marketers and inflicted on the public via expansive and expensive propaganda campaigns.

its not that these are ‘bad people’ (as if the opinion of random internet posters would matter in that regard), its that they exhibit what some leftists consider to be problematic behavior and thought processes. and since they are not on this board to have their feelings hurt we use the format of ‘dunking’. this is a trait not unique to hexbear but common to english language, where the fundamental misattribution error is basically baked in to the syntax and grammar.

like yeah, we’re not going to write a marxist essay for every marvel enjoyer analysing their plight and oppression. these treats are mostly for rich white suburban kids and their parents, marvel enjoyers are not some oppressed minority yearning to be free of the yoke of hexbears telling them they like silly mindless shit. we are going to dunk on them like we do for EVERY SINGLE OTHER example of problematic thought or behavior.

just like we don’t pearl-clutch over nazis or cops or liberals that support genocide, who were ‘just victims of propaganda and society’ (which is true!), we don’t pearl clutch over this kind of problematic mindlessness either.

media consumption is not some kind of sacred event that cannot ever be criticized in another, we are allowed to draw conclusions, even critical and negative ones, from the behaviors and attitudes of others.

I wonder if when Marvel introduces Captain Israel (I’ve no idea what her name is; she’s IDF too) if she’ll have as part of her backstory that she participated in the genocide of Palestinians happening right now; maybe she can attack a random brown family in America when she sees that one of them wears a Palestinian scarf (as some zionist person attacked a (Sikh) dad (who was wearing a Palestinian scarf) holding his kid, throwing hot coffee at him and allegedly saying she hoped his kid would burn in an oven).

Honestly agree with the second comment because modern trailers basically spoil movies, and a ton of reviewers just write complete trash. Like sure I’ll look at rotten tomatoes scores just to check that what I’m going to watch isn’t complete nonsense, but I’m not going to read a review written by someone that might not even understand the movie themselves. See the original reviews for Starship Troopers, the reviewers completely missed the entire point of the film. Media literacy has never been great, and it’s honestly been at an all time low in the past few years.

The difference is that I probably won’t find superhero slop or Prestige TV slop entertaining/fun though. Honestly tuned out of the superhero movies after Age of Ultron. They’re not really movies anymore, just really long series episodes with a large gap in between.

I never understood it. I consume crap sometimes the same way I eat McDonald’s sometimes, I suppose because I’m poor and sometimes I’m also weak and depressed and lazy, but it always makes me feel like shit afterwards. What’s going on with these people that pursue and process McDonald’s the same way they would a five star meal, metaphorically speaking? I dunno.
Probably McDonald’s is not the right metaphor. I’ve said it many times but I really think entertainment is the 21st century opium of the masses. It’s a way to tune out. But holy shit you would have to be a cynical, hopeless wretch to uncritically embrace it.

They’ve been left near-tasteless by the education system and the media. They don’t have the receptors in the metaphorical organ/brain to taste anything beyond the slop sadly. Like they only can taste salt, grease, and sweet. And everyone telling them the figurative McDonalds isn’t good enough is an alien to them.
